when I degree'd my cam in I also noted that the crank pointer on front cover was 2 degrees out, I slotted the holes to adjust it.

Finally about to start timing it all in as rebuilding the head has been more time consuming than I thought plus I have been doing one or two bits to raise a little cash to fund it.

congratulations Adam you are the winner 8)
I never even knew there was a right and wrong way round until I spotted it in the Haynes while skimming  so off came the head and check the inlets too, only to find errors there  if only I had not fitted new springs they would have been correct.

Now I have an important question cos my brain is not working well today.

What position in degrees relative to TDC should full lift occur on no 1 inlet?
The cam timing is given as 32/68 68/32.

At the moment the setting is full lift at 115deg ATDC and using a feeler the duration is 270deg.

My brain hurts :?

Jon, the duration is 280deg and full lift is at 108deg ATDC on the inlets based on 32/68 68/32

hope that helps

it makes me wonder how many other people have done that, & whether its really a problem?

I would think many people have done that. I do not suppose in the short term it would cause a problem but in the long term the spring would probably fail prematurely. However as most people on here are rebuilding there engines to get the maximum performance from it, you will lose power because the springs are the wrong way up. It will take more pressure to open the valve with the spring installed upside down thus robbing you of a little power.

If it did not matter there would not be a top & bottom. :D
