Re: Redtop sprint
A bit more progress.
Electrics - moved the battery to the rhs. Extended the main battery lead, it now runs straight from the battery to the pos terminal on the starter and then I used the original feed to the starter as a back feed to the main pos termina block on the lhs chassis rail.
The alternator connections were easy , just changed the terminal ends so they fit direct to vauxhall alternator.
Need to extend the temp gauge wire as it sits on the other side of the vauxhall engine.
Also found a home for the coil pack and bracket on the bulkhead.
More photos to follow. I am hoping to make much more progress over the xmas break as I have 10 days at home...
If fact the only thing I need to buy now is the megajolt ecu.

Re: Redtop sprint
I've followed this item with great interest, I have a pair of red tops sat in the shed, but have no gearboxes yet. I see one of them is sporting a distributor while the other one has lots of wires and a few eletric boxes etc. trouble is cant remember where it all goes, so may be chasing you for details once I get a gearbox. Both motors came out of Calibra's that went rusty, but ran great. Just found 4 branch exhaust and a very set of 17" alloys, god knows where they appeared from. Keep up the good work, look forward to joining you one day.

You have to bin the distributor, no way will it fit with it. it will stick about 6 inch into the bulkhead!longboarder wrote:I've followed this item with great interest, I have a pair of red tops sat in the shed, but have no gearboxes yet. Strangely I have a spare gearbox that I was keeping hold of until I run mine. Mind you the one fitted has been fully rebuilt so it should be fine.
It appears we can use the old carlton 8v sump which is great news as it took me ages to source a suitable one from germany.
The exhaust manifold is the hardest job when doing the conversion. Everything else is relativey straight forward...
Hope to have it on the road come end of march at the latest.

What about..................

Re: Redtop sprint
I used a gearbox from an Omega 2.0 16v. Upsides were it only cost £40 from my local general scrappy and it's concentric hydraulic slave cylinder matched up perfectly with my Tolly's master. Downside is the Omega box has no speedo drive gear (but you can fit a Carlton one, just be prepared to fit a new output shaft seal) You also need to use a Carltons 10mm thicker flywheel to get the clutch spacing correct (the Omega has a dual mass YEUGH!)longboarder wrote:I've followed this item with great interest, I have a pair of red tops sat in the shed, but have no gearboxes yet. Re: Redtop sprint
More progress.
Battery cable replaced as I have relocated the battery to the other side.
Starter motor and alternator wiring done to fit vauxhall items
Heater fan flap repositioned again, so it does not hit the bonnet.
Exhaust manifold now fitted.
Wiring connectors made up for Edis unit, Throttle position sensor and coil pack.
Coil pack mounted to bulkhead.
Feels like I am starting to get there now. Next job is to drill the toothed wheel so it fits in the right position relative to TDC and make up a simple bracket to hold the voltage reference sensor in place.

Fitted R1 fuel pump and filter
Fitted Edis unit. This will sit below the volvo 240 header tank.

Re: Redtop sprint
More bits and bobs.
Cooling pipework completed, bit of a mare getting it all in there but hopefully it will do the job. Heater matrix included in pipework design so I can keep my toes warm
Throttle cable fitted to R1 carbs.
Checked R1 carb main jets - they should have been 1.8 mm diameter. They were 2.35mm so would vastly overfuel at full throttle. Just bought some 1.8mm jets off ebay to replace them.
Megajolt trigger wheel redrilled and trial fitted to crank hub.
Photos show the crank hub at TDC with the missing tooth 90 degress past where the sensor will go. The sensor bracket will be knocked up next week. If I get this bit right I can actually run the engine in "limp home mode" running 10 deg BTDC through the EDIS module. The megajolt ECU will have to wait a bit whilst I get the funds together.
Carbs to be finally fitted next weekend all being well.
Then its time to fit the SAAB rad, finish the wiring and fill up with fluids.
More to follow.

Hit it.

Aye indeed..........
Good progress Ian.
I do have a small observation/suggestion.....
Given the short lifespan of kevlar hoses, I'd fit a silicone hose in place of the kevlar hose that is fitted to the heater.

Re: Redtop sprint
It's coming on great Ian, The turnkey moment is fast approaching! Still think that pipework is a birdsnest tho! Regards Steve

Yep, may do as I need small bore silicon hose for the bleed pipe. The black ones to the heater have been there for 15 years plus mind you...
