Nothing too exciting but all worthwhile. The rad is in and all of the mounting bolts were de-rusted and copaslipped, the heater hoses are reconnected, the rocker cover has been fitted with its gasket. New hose clips sorted, old wire clips cleaned up nicely. Various other bits have been painted (not telling you which bits yet). As said before, all waiting on the 3 bolts to enable the cooling system to be ticked as done.

Some photos for those of us who like photos:

Is this correctly connected up 'hose-wise'?

Image

I would like to have replaced the heater hoses just for the sheer hell of it but they appear fine enough for now. All of the pipes have been rust killed, primed and painted:

The rad has now been painted:

That's it for now. I will try and do as much as possible before I do my late shifts, with the aim of a last big push on Saturday:

Hi Ken.......

Yes that is the correct hose arrangement on the expansion bottle.

If it was me, I'd be fitting decent silicone hoses for the heater and (British made) JCS hose clips.

Now for a telling off,
:wary: you are very naughty using hose clips that are way too large for the hoses!

Gotta use what I had to hand. Time will bring about improvements.

Need to get it on the road and look at what else needs attention.

Update alert!!!!

Ok, everything went full steam ahead today. Hoses were secured, clips were clipped and nuts tightened.

Here are some random piccies:

Image

Image

Image

I painted the water pump housing satin black as I knew the cleaned up finish would not have lasted. I quite like the look.

Image

The finished article (apart from the air filter housing)

Image

Battery hooked up, fuel pumping as it should..............

Turns over.................

and dumps a load of petrol out of the pipe at the back of the carb. As you can see, a quick and dirty fix was found for that.

Image

Further healthy turning over ensues and ...............

nothing.

No catching whatsoever. Bleghhhhhhhhhh!

Ig light comes on, oil pressure light comes on and goes out after about 2 or 3 seconds.

A little disappointed to be honest.

Any ideas?

Ken,
Give it a capful of fuel directly into the intake, alternatively, carnk it with no choke, but manually choke it with your hand over the inlet.
It does take a while for fuel to get through.

Other thought, is it flooding? That carb has been standing for a while, it might be worth taking the top of the float chamber off, and making sure everything is clean internally.

Spark is there mate.

I took off the top of the float chamber and took out all the fuel that was in there. I gave it a clean and to be honest, it wasn't too bad. I will try the other suggestions but won't be able to get to the car until Friday unfortunately. Might that little bendy tube thing underneath be blocked? Did I do the right thing by blocking that outlet like I did?

I doubt it will be anything major.

No, that's the overflow. Fuel that flows out there is caused by a non good fuel level in the bowl. This pipe prevents the fuel leaking in the carb/manifold/engine. The fuel is now leaking into your engine and mixes with your new fresh oil. Find the cause and do not never ever block this pipe again.

This is now confusing as the original carb didn't have that overflow pipe on the lid of the float chamber. I haven't changed the oil yet. That will be done on Friday.

I'm puzzled.

If you're getting fuel out of the overflow then the carb is flooding, take the top off the float chamber and clean out the needle valve within it then reassemble and try a "flood start" ie no choke and full throttle gradually applied while turning over.

Ok, I have ordered a couple of gaskets for the float chamber top as no doubt the damn thing will be mullered with all of the unscrewing/tightening, etc. The float chamber will be cleaned as will all of the associated gubbins.

Just out of interest, why would it be that the original carb had no visible overflow would it not be potentially vulnerable to the same maladies?

Where should I be routing a suitable rubber hose from that overflow? (apart from back to the bloody fuel tank  )

Hope people like the look of the engine by the way.

Early cars either had no overflow or just a hole in the cover so the fuel could spill out willy nilly, usually onto the exhaust! After a bit the H&S guys got involved and the overflow pipe was introduced. Just run a bit of pipe to atmosphere low down and well away from the hot bits!
As an aside I take the tops off many carbs frequently and virtually never need to change the gaskets, the fuel is not under pressure here (in fact it's not even supposed to be up to this level) so the seal does not need to be that good.
