This weather is a real setback - I'm ready to paint but it's 75% humidity in the garage and I don't want to end up with a crap finish because it's too damp.

Well, it was a nice day yesterday so I took the plunge and shot some red on to it. The camera makes it look a brighter red than it really is.

You can see the odd speck of dust in the paint (I don't have a spray booth unfortunately) but that will all come straight out with some 1800grit.


I'll mask the car off and do the roof with something cheap, durable and easy before fitting the vinyl roof.






Not sure why it looks so orange peely in this picture. It's turned pink as well. lol. Looks fine in reality.

Seems to have gone on nicely, well done .

They reckon that we are in for a lot of hot weather in the next few days so this should help you crack on with the car.

Ahh great. The rain really held me back. It meant I didn't even have room to prep the doors and bonnet.

One thing about red looks good nice job,
just a bit of 2000 grit and soap to finish nicely

Would have been nice to manage the actual 10 days, but rain held me back for 2-3 of them.

I've also got a few parts that need collecting to finish this off - I don't mind it running on a little if it means it's a better, more lasting job at the end. It can't be one of these perfect 2 year builds though.

I've already got one of those still to start. lol

10 days! this is brilliant. That means you can do 36.5 club members restos by next summer

Well, it's now flatted, been delayed further by the doors really. I'm not happy with the state of the ones that came with it so I'm picking up a set of very tidy looking doors from a member on here. They will be painted along with the mint bootlid and bonnet thursday night.

I spent the weekend in Brighton on a stag doo (I believe he's straight) so that's taken a chunk of time. I fettled the paint yesterday, put on the new rocker cover gasket, replaced the viscous fan with another knackered one and started cleaning/polishing the wheels up. I also sorted the choke cable and put a thinner oil in the dashpots but it still doesn't pick up as it should. I think I'll weld a boss in the exhaust and temporarily fit the wideband this weekend so that I can get it set up perfectly.

I love wideband AFR gauges.

Assuming the vinyl roof and the new tyres turn up pretty quickly we should be going for an MOT within the next week.

Not quite 10 days, but still not a terrible turnaround.

Is there a cheaper place for a carpet than Rimmer bros or is the Rimmer bros carpet a really nice quality one?

How common are black door cards in nice condition? I don't want a tan interior and since most of it is knackered I may as well change it to black. Since the dolomite will be seeing a bit of trackday action and some long distance driving I may be installing a set of fishnet recaros (kindly donated by a friend), but need black rear seats (standard) and black door cards to match.

I have to say, I'm impressed with the Dolomite. I'm used to fords from a similar era and the dolomite really ran rings around them in every single way I can think of. I presume it was the factory that let Leyland down in the 70s, rather than the design office???

If you want to just change the colour of the rest of the trim to black, you might want to try Vinylkote or Halfords vinyl spray paint rather than getting different trims. There is a very recent posting that shows how good this can be. Obviously if you have fabric seats then you might want to have a think about some kind of synthetic dye perhaps.

Hmmm....maybe. If the black cards were readily avilable it made more sense to sell the tan and buy the black ones. If they're not then I may have to try changing the colour of the tan ones.

We'll see how it goes.

I have a set of excellent black door cards, that i gained from Ken. They are from 4 door Toledo i believe so not sure of all the differences though i know the sprint ones have the wooden caps.

Toledo door cards are vinyl top to bottom, Dolomite ones have a "fuzziness" on the bottom quarter. If you can live without having that then they will do the job.
