Just as another aside, not being used to Toledo's I'm not sure how "light" the clutch pedal should feel, but it feels "light" to me as though it's not doing an awful lot (which it obviously isn't).

Just another update, I had read on another forum of the slave cylinder piston becoming "stuck". This morning, I decided to remove the slave cylinder from the car. As I started to untighten the bolt on the slave cylinder clamp, I heard and felt a large "bang" from the slave cylinder itself - it jolted but didn't shift.
I lowered the car off the ramp and started her up - this time, I could no longer engage the gears without pressing the clutch pedal so something has changed. I pushed the clutch pedal which has now lost it's lightness and the car went into gear, although not smoothly. The wheels are also engaging as soon as the pedal is depressed, i.e. not when it's released.
Any ideas????
