Interesting to hear the 'database' is shared. I have a few Pre 63 dateless UK plates that I've transferred to cars in the family over the years, the process took about 4 weeks in each case.
I stumbled across a seller of NI Plates, sold as 'dateless coverplates' that were reasonable. Since the letter Z was introduced into the UK plate system, the NI plates do not stand out as so different to a UK dateless plate IMHO. Although the xIxnnnn format is still a bit to diff to the UK formats, anyway I digress.
I was a little wary as I initially understood that the transfer fee had to be paid twice, once to the UK office and once to Swansea. The quote I had showed only one fee payable and the plate was a good deal so I gave it a whirl. It took a bit longer, about 6 weeks, not a problem as I was told the process takes a little longer. The second time I tried it, same process, only one fee payable, defo the case as the price of the plate and the DVLA fee came to less than twice the transfer fee. Again, process took about 6 weeks.
I guess that once the plate is on a UK V5 then the transfer time will be the same as any other UK format plate
Northern Ireland Registrations?
Re: Northern Ireland Registrations?
Since I wrote my original answer to this post, the Coleriane (northern Ireland) office has closed for good. Now all car registrations, no matter what part of the UK are handled by swansea.
