So if the cable is disconnected can't you just drive it on the selector or just as is in D?

The kickdown is for changing down a gear manually. It is possible to downshift manually by moving the lever accordingly.

I've not had chance to disconnect the kickdown cable yet and I've lent my jump leads out so I'd need to charge the battery and hope I can get it started on the key.

Not wise to run with the cable disconnected as the cable gives the increased pressure required for larger throttle openings. It's OK for a test drive on light throttle but that's about it. Selector position isn't really any help with this problem on these particular boxes as "2" is 1-2 2-1, not second gear only, so it's no different to "D". Either of them will suffer the late upshift, and there's no way of manually selecting second.

The Plus Gas did the trick. It is documented on my "resto" thread (Yes, it is finally back!).
