Thanks, but it turned out to be a bad cell in the battery. Could be my fault as I have been cranking, when cold, till the the oil light went out, and only then pulling the choke out.

A simple bolt-on upgrade is the 18ACR which is 45 amp (against the 36 of the 17ACR) and was specified for the police cars. These can be found brand new on ebay for under £50. I could be tempted myself...
