Stockpiling...
Re: Stockpiling...
"HMC Archives:
Further to your enquiry the build date recorded for chassis number WF/52529-DL is 13th August 1975."
The car was registered on 24/9/75, must be something of a record!
Oh well, I'll have to wait until next year for free road tax.

Re: Stockpiling...
I've been here before but i'll go again! Prior to 1/8/83, imported, re imported and ex military cars registered in the uk were registered with the suffix letter that was current at the time of registration, thus my november 64 LHD Volvo Amazon was registered on a 67 F plate cos thats when it was brought to the UK. After 1/8/83, age related plates were applied where proof of age existed, otherwise a Q was issued. I know this with absolute certainty as my boss at the time fell foul of it! Somewhere around june 83 he bought 3 ex military Ford Cortina mkVs, 1 of which was lightly damaged. He applied the limited addition "crusader" stripes and badges to the 2 undamaged ones and sold them on the Y plates they were given which made them appear newer than the 79 Ts they should have had (no fraud, he told the buyers all about it - but the Jones's next door were doubtless impressed!) However the 3rd car was not repaired till mid july and the greedy s*d decided to wait till August 1st to register it to get (as he thought) a nice "A" reg plate. Imagine his face when he returned from the LVLO with a "T" plate!
But the point is this, if indeed an "A" plate Dolly exists, it must have come by it "honestly" by being a proper late registration and not by being brought in from Jersey or Ireland or WHY.

Useful info there Steve that would tie in nicely with my 77 Irish spit getting a Y plate.

Can ask please Bill how you got that info? Is it from a Heritage certificate?Edin Dundee wrote:"HMC Archives:

I used the £6 cheapskate option on the HMC website, gives you the build date only.
I don't need the full expense heritage certificate, and it was a long shot anyway given the car's so far unblemished provenance.

Re: Stockpiling...
Interesting what Jon said about the NI plate car . My 1850 has had NI plates from new and in the early days of my dolomite ownership (2001/2) I had a few insurers turn me down for insurance simply on the blanket " we don't insure NI registered cars". No problem now.
Going back to the original question my car was also registered in Jan 1976 but the Heritage cert indicates it was made in Nov 1975 and dispatched immediately to a dealer in NI. No hint of stockpiling - at the factory at least.
My 2005 Rover 75 however is a totally different story, having got registered days before Longbridge shut and sat somewhere until the following October....

Re: Stockpiling...
Dealers did order cars "on spec" , my Toledo was dispatched from the factory on 6/12/73 to the selling dealer, R.B. Massey in Beverley, Yorkshire. However the "order" for it was not placed till 8/1/74 (I have all the original sales docs) it was registered on the 11th and delivered on the 12th January 74, the delay being to pemit PDI and Ziebarting to be done. Some cars waited in dealerships MUCH longer before being sold, I can remember, as an apprentice at a Triumph dealership in Uxbridge, a Dolphin grey 2000 mkI auto which was in the showroom, unregistered, when I joined the firm in Sept 1970 and was not sold until early 72 (at a bargain basement price IIRC) The poor thing must have been getting on for 3 years old when it was sold! I think a combination of poor selling colour, autobox and the advent of the mkII 2000 in 1970 all conspired against it, but someone got a great deal!
