The reality is, VAG deliberately deceived their customers. They broke trust. That is costly and will have a long term impact.
The breaking of trust adds a huge multiplier on top of the specific engineering itself, which is in reality nothing like as fundamental as a safety issue.
I think the problem is multiplied even more because often people buying VAG are smug in their decision. After all, it is just an intelligent, well informed, sensible decision buying a a VW Golf. Well now, the people who took so much satisfaction in making a good decision about which car to buy, look like they have been taken for a ride. So the man in the Focus is now suddenly able to snigger at the man in the Golf. The next time people make a purchasing decision, it could be enough to choose another brand.

Jonners, I think you need to get clear on the use of the name you called them though, I am sure an innocent mistake....

I wonder how many other manufacturers have done the same thing, only time will tell.

I'm not sure how much of an affect this will have on Volkswagen, I genuinely don't think people really care that much. Audi, Seat and Skoda, probably very little. You have to remember that the vast majority of prople who buy an Audi have no idea that they are owned by Volkswagen.

Never did like diesels anyway! Noisy dirty smelly things!

Cant wait for the scrappage scheme to start, get rid of the derv cars lol. The governments have finally realised the derv emissions are worse then petrol and high efficiency petrol engines are just as economical imo.

more to the point is that they lied! and gave false data/infomation,,,,,how many of you bought diesels and where told diesels are now clean,,,and blah blah blah

I hate to say this but no one has actually come out at VW and lied here.

So they fitted a defeat device that recognised when the car was being tested and lowered the NO2 emissions but when presented with the information by the EPA they admitted to it.

So yes, they are guilty of deception but when caught they didn’t lie about it did they.

ok,i may of been harsh on saying lied,,,,,i should of said they held back infomation on true running data not tested bed data,tested bed data is no use to the normal person and different driving styles/conditions,they only admitted to after being caught/found out/leeked info/i heard in a pub
its still pulling the wool over people eyes to make sales of new cars

Maybe they have not outright lied......... but they have surely "been economical with the truth" !!!!!!!!
I heard Fiat have also confessed to similar "economies", my money says they were all at it!

Who knows how far back this goes,

My 730ld (2007) went for an mot last month, emissions: zero.
The mot tester said that's as good as a new car, zero at 80k miles?

They have been dis-honest and I am not condoning them. But - if I was still a VAG owner and if the cars pass the MOT emissions test - what's the problem? I doubt the cars are 'clever' enough to be able to detect an MOT tester sticking a probe up the tail pipe.

I understood it that the emissions were manipulated during 'test mode' to get better figures that were not availabe in 'normal' mode, where you get better MPG (or litres per 100km) and engine response. 99% of folk will take better mpg rather than lower emissions I bet.

I de-catted my MX5 and then put it back in for the MOT. Its so loud without the CAT I decided to leave it installed. Probably a good 10-15% power difference.

I have a petrol scirocco tsi and when the mileage mpg tells me its doing 35mpg average its not! Its lying to me. Most oems also have the speedo running a bit faster than true- speed camera safe or more to the gallon?
