The woodruff key shouldn't be able to dislocate once the cam is positioned? Or is it possible that a missing circlip leaves just enough space to slide out?
My best guess would be that it went wrong during the assembly last time.

I second that!^^^^
What probably happened was the key was dislodged from it's slot when the eccentric was slid over (easily done), landed un-noticed in the O/D extension housing then dropped in the bottom when the box was righted from the vertical. Hey presto, no pump drive!
I'm far too much of a gentleman to say "I told you so!" Just glad you sussed it!

Blimey that's a new one on me....
I normally have to mullah the key to get it out on strip down and it takes a fair old whack to get it in far enough for the cam slot to clear it.
So how yours "fell out" - I can't imagine...

Not done as many Sprint boxes as you Jonners, but done an awful lot of GT6 and similar and they've ranged from mullah out to fall out but more fell out than stayed in.

Final solution, my bad, I forgot to install the spring clip that prevents
the cam from moving on the mainshaft. Doh!!!!!!!!!!

Bit of a swine to get on and off are those....
Every time I seem to do it differently...circlip pliers, screw drivers, hooks.....you name it -
I still have trouble...
