VGK Sprint Restoration

OUCH!
Not a wound you want to bash again or get grease in!

Re: VGK Sprint Restoration
My hand has finally healed enough to use, so started to get the engine ready to take out.
It was all going well until I got to the bottom bolt on the exhaust to manifold joint. Whoever designed that should be shot!!
So after getting soaked and nearly blown away finally called it a day. I did some research online and removing the engine and sub frame from below now looks like a better option.
Any advice would be appreciated, at least I can do all the bushes whilst it's all out and refurb and painting of all the suspension.

Re: VGK Sprint Restoration
Just lift the engine out with the downpipe in situ. It will be easier to remove with the engine out of the car. If you're going to renew the subframe bushes get the Super Flex ones. I fitted them last year when I had to have a couple of my subframe mounts repaired. While the subframe is off you can check the condition of the chassis legs. The Club do these for £80 per side. I had an offside one fitted in 2014.

Thanks for the advice, got the bushes you recommended.
All the sub frame, engine etc all out and in bits now. Now got to clean it all before painting. I might get the sub frame blasted and might even get it powder coated to.
Over the last few weeks I have got loses of little jobs done so quite happy. I'll put some photo on soon .

Re: VGK Sprint Restoration
Once I got the engine and gear box apart I found a lot of oil all inside the bell housing, I take it that it shouldn't be like that and a seal has gone?
I'm good at body work but still learning the mechanics as I go, so when I get to rebuilding the engine it will be a learning curve. Changed engines before but never pulled them apart before.
Will post some photo of more interesting bits when I get to them

Re: VGK Sprint Restoration
It sounds like your crankshaft rear oil seal has gone. You can either replace just the seal or do what I did which was to remove the housing for the seal. If you remove the housing, you will need a new gasket and don't forget to remove the 2 bolts where it is bolted to the sump. It would be a good idea to change the clutch while you have the engine out of the car.

Re: VGK Sprint Restoration
Thanks, I'm going to completely strip the engine down, I've got a new short engine to build, new pistons, gaskets, bearings all sorts !
I found a couple of broken brackets on the upper wishbones that I'll have to get made as can't seem to find them anywhere but there easy to do so shouldn't be a problem. Still cleanup all the suspension bits seems to take forever but will look good once it's all done.
Have a good weekend everyone!
