I agree fully. There are many other possible faults in combination that might be the source of the problem.

However, my responses to all of those that are not a problem with either or both the head gasket or the studs will be to replace the engine with the known good spare I currently have lying on the carport floor. I just think, given that the gasket that was in did 15k, and there's evidence of something like half a millimetre stretch in the studs/bolts, it's worth one more go at fixing this one. If that don't work, it'll get replaced, whatever the fault/faults.

The 16v Slant 4 engine is more fun than the 3.5 V8, because you mostly drive it on the upslope of the torque curve.
