Do you have a light unit for a pre focus type of bulb or for the later H4?

Could be the wrong bulb has been fitted which wont match the fresnel pattern on the glass or the parabolic reflector shape if the filament is in the wrong place.

Good question Jon.

To be honest not sure, the bulb in it was a standard one and I replaced that with a new one and checked the bulb and holder were both locating properly, and the wiring was correct, it went to main beam and dipped ok.

How would I be able to tell? All I can say is that they are both Lucas have different numbers moulded into the lens and the lensing is slightly different. I haven't removed the "cut off" one but the bulb looks to be a standard one on that, golf ball shape rather than the halogen slim shape looking through the lens.

Every type of bulb has it's own type of fitting thus only the bulb that belongs to a certain lamp does fit properly. We all did see creative solutions sometimes as cut off tags etc but normally no other bulb does fit the lamp what's it designed for.

THe standard bulb for the square light is the golf ball one, the number is 410 (LLB 410 in Lucas) but if you ask for a 410 bulb in the factors you will get the right one, just make sure you fit it correctly, the locating tag is tiny!
There is also a Halogen conversion bulb available for the 410 fitting to give you the same 60/55w output as the later and more common 472 bulb (the one with the tripod fitting) I have them in the Carledo, but I can't remember the number offhand.

definitely 410 bulbs and they are located correctly I tripled checked them and tried to put them in different ways but only went one way.

As soon as the headlight arrives I will swop it over. I think I have sorted out a Speedometer, its not available till Tuesday but its in a 1300 Dolly in a scrap yard in Doncaster, they also have a headlamp it turns out. In pics the car looks pretty sound. Its in Motor Hog Doncaster.
