I have always thought there was something of a random numbering system….

the Sprint I had was Comm No. VA154 but the engine number was VA283 and the diff was VA246 (sorry, don't remember the gearbox number).

The Comm No. on my early 1850 is over 2000 higher than that of the engine!

Triumph didn't go in in for the whole "matching numbers" gig that you get on American cars and British Fords. Vauxhall, though owned by GM, don't have matching numbers either.
Basically its because the engines were built in 1 factory, gearbox and diff in others then all assembled somewhere else (Speke) where the lads on the line didn't give a big rats doodahs. Commission numbers would have been sequential to production order and that's the best you get. I saw (a long time ago) the GT6 KC3 (John Kipping had it at the time) The engine was KC6, so even that early it was mix-n-match!
