The last one I changed had no discernible bore wear but knackered teeth on pump and jacko due to an amateur fitting the pump so badly
it loaded on the pump cover and was "squealing"....

Unbelievable but saveable if not cheap....

There's marks on the cover from the LHT bolt head, and the pump's rusty as I don't know what - I know the car stood for many years befor I got it, and I've had it stood for a couple of years since the kids needed ferry service in the doly. So I'm kind of hoping this is going to be like that. But it's just got to wait for a few weeks while I get the Herald sorted as a replacement - half-shaft UJs have gone again (rubbish ones from China or India, methinks). That's going to go down well with the 15 year old, she says she hates that car.

Is it just clonking slightly? Try putting a shim under the clips if there is no rotational play. The trunions and shafts can "spread" a little
which lets the spider float sideways end to end and make a lot more clonking noise than you would think possible.

Shims cut from a coke can under the circlips cured it on my Spit. Its a well known thing in TSSC circles....

Yes, it's just a soft clunk, clunk, clunk when slowing without brakes. I shall see what I can see. Thanks for that Jon.

I got extra shims with the UJs when I got them, but I think they've wormholed off somwhere by now.

I was going to get shims for the NOS QH replacements I got (though I think one's only a QH box). So I may see what's what with those when I get them.

Classic end float sound then. Dont worry about it or just fit shims....

It IS worth fixing though as it can wear the splines in the yoke and in the worst case the shaft can come out of the yoke...

But that's after a good long period of neglect.
