Refarding which way round they should go, there is a seal incorporated in the bearing which should be facing the gearbox.
Looking at my photos again, the seal appears to be at the flat end, in which case I have put it in the wrong way round. Oh well, its been no trouble so far...

I am guessing the seal is to stop grease escaping along the shaft and contaminating the clutch (but there shouldn't be that much present anyway) OR to stop dust getting into the bearing.
