But is a car worth more with an original engine ,than one that's been replaced (not matching numbers)

In my opinion, only if the car has great provenance, like a winning racer, or the first made. As a 'journeyman' car, probably not.

There's really no such thing as a matching numbers Dolomite, Sprint or otherwise. True, if you have a commission number in the hundreds and an engine number in the 20 thousands, it's unlikely to be original, but even the first cars off the line didn't have exactly matching numbers the way US cars (and most Fords) do.

What i meant about matching numbers was the number as listed on log book

The engine number is required to match the engine number on the log book. If it doesn't you should fill the logbook out with the "new" engine number and send off to DVLA to get it corrected.

My experiences have been so similar to Alun's, even over the other side of the world. A decade or so I had a payout on agreed value (less excess) within a week. No argument.

I wouldn't touch any policy, for classic or modern that wasn't agreed value. Market value insurance for cars like Dolomites and you might as well not waste your money and just pay for third party.

I do believe though that it is prudent to have some sort of evidence to back up the agreed value you insure for, just to avoid any argument later.

There are also more 'get out' clauses creeping in as well. My latest one, on a powerful modern though, includes:
- only insured if NO modifications from manufacturer spec, including engine, sound system, steering, suspension, tyres or wheels
- all traffic offences for named drivers have been declared (other than parking)
- non named drivers have a hefty additional excess and if they are regular driver, who haven't been named then they may not be covered.

Some of this can get quite scary as this doesn't only apply to your vehicle not being covered, but if you are at fault, you may personally be liable for third party costs and damages.

Anybody got any recent values of1973 Mimosa Sprints changing hands, basket cases included.

There was a nice looing supposed 73 car on ebay for 11k, IIRC, a little while ago, but it looked like a much later car inside.

FINALLY!!!!! A car which purports to be an early car with almost all the signs that it acually IS an early car and not a reshell. Only the late style under-riders and missing holes in the front valance are not in keeping with early spec and this is understandable if the car was "rebuilt with new BL panels" in the 1990s as claimed, since replacement series I spec parts weren't available then (or since)

Currently at £4750 with only 2 hours to go, i'd say it's a bit of a bargain, even if it does need some cosmetic tidying!
