Many thanks for all the advice being given and for all your kind thoughts.

I have been very lucky with the response so far. This afternoon the insurance assessor telephoned to tell me he had received the quote for the repairs £3k and was happy to give the firm authority to proceed if I was happy to use the firm. I told him to give the go ahead.

In response to the second car. On checking I do have Salvage Retention cover but I did not take up the option of "Nil Deduction Salvage Retention" at a cost of £15. The means I have to pay what the insurance company could obtain if they were to sell the car. This is something that we all need to consider when we are setting up agreed valuations of our cars. The insurance assessor could not tell me what this figure will be at this time.

I have another company coming on Monday to quote for the replacement of the garage door so I should be able to submit two quotes to SAGA the car drivers insurance company sometime next week.
