Meanwhile my book of complete car repair and maintenance (from 1988) suggests that the car should be between 5-10 metres from the wall
We did it by dead reckoning, if it looks right, it probably is. We parked it about half a car length from the wall and it didn't fail. No idea what the distance should be.

I don't think I've ever had even a mention of headlights being out but I do remove the trim before I take my cars so maybe my tester does the adjustment and doesn't tell me. when I had the spitfire I know he wouldn't even bother checking due to the way the bonnet lifted always made a difference to alignment.

I haven't put the trim on for that reason, it sounds like a right faff to do so I'm just going to ask Trev if I can do it before he checks them.

Cheers everyone for the reply's.

My method ( )

I use the bimmer (modern), to mark out the max top height and left to right, then park the dolly in the
same space and set as close as possible.

The distance from the wall can be any distance, but the dimension to the left of and below the marks will increase with increased separation of car and wall. The further away you are, the more accurate you are likely to be, but the test has a range of acceptance.
