I have just become the owner of a Dolomite Sprint and it is presenting theses symptoms also.
after running for 15mins on low idle the engine appears to be very hot.
With an infrared temp sensor gun I am measuring temps of 110c at the thermostat housing and 46c>.53c at the outlet of the water pump, where the bottom rad hose is connected.
When I stop the engine it starts to "bloop, bloop" in the expansion bottle and will also spit some coolant out for a a couple of seconds
Could this be a circulation issue ??
Firstly, welcome to the forum.
I suggest you start with the thermostat……
Ian
Hi
I have fitted a new thermostat and the issue remains!
Any other suggestions welcome
Hmm....

What is the temperature at the back of the cylinder head (where the blanking plate is)?
Are you still running the original belt driven fan?
If you trying running it without the thermostat does the problem still persist?

When the thermostat opens water starts to circulate through the radiator and this can be confirmed by the bottom hose next to the radiator starting to warm up. If the hose doesn't start to warm up here then water isn't circulating because most likely either the pump impeller is slipping on its splines, or the pump spindle and jackshaft skew gears have shredded and this will cause the symptoms you describe.

Not sure I will have to check the temp at the rear of the cylinder head
The car came with an electric fan fitted and this certainly seems to move enough air around.
If I run the engine without the thermostat the issue is the same.

I have a gut feeling the issue lays with the water pump as it all looks original, I will bite the bullet and pull it apart.
Thanks for the input.

What kind of madness is this?
Someone has fitted a brass plug where the water pump impeller should be!
I have heard of such things but surely there should be an electric water pump fitted once this is done ??
Does anyone know of another reason this plug would be fitted ?
See the photos I have attached.

Yes, there should be an electric pump somewhere...
If not, I think you've found your problem!!
If you choose to replace the OE pump, that's a 12v cover you have there.

I can't find an electric pump anywhere, surely it wouldn't be to hard to find?
The car has had a new top and bottom hose fitted recently by the look of them, maybe it was removed then?
Anyway I have a spare 12 vane pump, so we will be going back to standard.
Any recommendations for the best coolant to use these days?

Amazing what people do!
As to coolant, Blue glycol stuff. I have been using own brand from Eurocarparts and GSF since they opened a branch very close to me, seems to work well enough and I have been using it for years. (but needs changing every couple of years)

As above, but at 50:50 mix.
If the pump you have isn’t new, it would be potentially time saving to replace the seals before fitting and checking the mating surface on underside of impeller is flat…
