I've used Avon tyres for the last few years. I always thought the more expensive the better the tyre -- not the case: On a programme Fifth Gear they tested different brands, from high end to mid range, economy and even used tyres. Even though the high end tyres suggested they gave better handling in dry weather and fuesl economy was a little better, in a odd twist they found that used (different makes on one car) stopped in a shorter space than the really expensive.

This programme suggested that tyres are a compromise: Economy v stopping in the wet. After undertaking research on the internet and speaking with a few tyre fitters, the best compromise is the Avon tyre.

Well it certainly made ME grin when I saw it! And we could all do with a laugh these days!

As to performance, I really couldn't say! It was on the rear end of a 2010 Citroen C4 Grand Picasso Diesel automatic, so not much there to test it's mettle!

It certainly takes the naming cake mate haha

PS..FALKENS :D :D

Thanks for your recommendations everybody. I went with T rating when the dealer promised me the tread is the same as H !

PS I didn't even end up having to refurb the alloys, credit to the previous owner(s), they were / are great ! Will likely polish them though, no kerbside damage either which is common here..

Though I didn't see it, Im guessing somewhere on it would be a "made in China" legend.

Nowhere else on earth would you find "luck" associated with a safety critical item, to western eyes, it is somewhere between horror and hilarity!

But the Chinese, as a nation, are in love with the notion of luck, I read recently of a Chinese businessman paying literally MILLIONS of HK dollars for the local reg number 888, 8 being a very lucky number in Chinese ideology.

One is inclined to think that perhaps they NEED luck when the goods they sell (and buy) are so poorly made, but in reality, this is only the same market forces at work as elsewhere in the world. I'm perfectly sure Chinese engineers CAN make quality products, it's just that, apparently, very few people want to PAY for quality any more! They'd rather buy cheap tat and then whinge when it breaks!

Which Falken tyres do you recommend / use ?

Buycarparts.co.uk offer ZIEX ZE914 185/60/13s for £48.58 including VAT and delivery.

They’re rated :-

Fuel economy E
Rain B
Noise 70db
Load 80 / 450kg
Speed H / 130mph

They also order ZIEX ZE914 ECORUNs for £55.48 which are the same spec.

Thanks, Richard

G'day Richard..

I went with Jeroen/Steve/Alex's Falken recommendation, still going strong, fitted Falken SN828 (175/70 R13 82T).

Mine's a road car so not seeing track use like some other great examples here, grip on odd roads here is excellent..also much more quiet than I was expecting, really impressed..

I have used Pirelli, and Vredestien. Happy with both, and I do drive like a lunatic! So they get a good workout!
