On the towbar wiring, do you know
if the tow car legally requires a back foglight, does the trailer also require one?

As far as I know, yes it does. There's probably something about it on the Gov.com website if you can be bothered to wade through it! My car is fitted with fogs anyway, though not a legal requirement on my 78 car and I have connected them to the trailer plug via the blue wire in the trailer wiring that is there for that purpose.

The trailer I use most often and my "ambulance" car transporter dolly, (itself a legal grey area) both have a foglight fitted, I also have a foglight fitted lightboard with a long cable and one of my number plates on it, others, well, TBH, i'm pretty relaxed about it! I tow quite a wide range of other peoples trailers, some have fogs, some don't and some you're lucky if the lights work! Living where I do and seeing how badly the local farmers maintain their trailers, I don't attract any unwanted attention at all! If, as happens from time to time, I have to tow down to London or similar, I make more of an effort!
