one advantae of Jaguar being Ford is that I think they have the same built in code reading ability. With Ign switched off press and hold the trip reset button and switch to ign to pos 2 hold for a few seconds then release. The gauges will then enter test mode. You can get the speedo and rev counter doing silly things, all the light will come up, you can have a KM/H readout on the trip computer but most importantly it will come up with DTC and either NONE hopefully or it will list the code(s). Then all you need to do is figure out what code is what! Might not work on a Jag though so don't hold me to this.

Still Malc like you say its done pretty well when you think how often old cars used to wear out. Even if they are simpler to fix. Wife's coil (one of 2) went the other week and you can't test them to find out which coil is faulty and at £85 each it's an expensive gamble. £200 later at the garage and a set of spark plugs later it's fine now. Shame cos it's such an easy job to do on the car I could have done it myself.

I think you got away with that one quite lucky. If your wife's coil goes it could well end up costing way more than 200 quid and you'll be in the workshop for 18 years....

Can't you chaps get code readers at Halfords or the like?

OBD II scanner

Autozone will plug their in for free if you don't have one, saves a bundle from going to the dealer.

Cheers

Oh yes you can I have a Snap On bit of kit that hasn't failed me yet.

Most of those after market code reader's don't read all the fault's/codes stored.

I know from fact they cant read all the Mercedes Codes.

A mate of mine who works on Vauxhall 'had a word' with his mate who works on Jags. Given that the X-Type is Ford mechanicals there was a chance my mates code reader (purchased with a view that he mainly does Vauxhall) might pick up the codes, his reader is listed as ford compatable but not Jag. He had a look and couldn't see any codes stored (doesn't mean there aren't any though).

Might be needing one of these

Get a whole Dolomite for that money

To cut a long story short, two fault codes 4th gear ratio & 5th gear ratio. Basically the Auto Box went crispy ducked and at 62000 Miles with a full service history and on a car known from new ain't really what you would expect.

Just the bill to pay now, even after Jags' contribution (fair play to them, even if I did have to demonstrate that I knew a thing ot two about these ere things we call automobiles) it is still a medication taking size of bill. This time of year and being as busy as i am, the task of doing an autobox swop on one of these is a sizeable job and I would have had to have treated myself to a Hamer 4 post lift.

Now years gone by, you used to get over 100,000 miles out of an Autobox on one of these, even two of them, one after the other. Nearly nipped up to scotland to bring this one back for my dad. Having said that, probably a good job it is Scotland or there would be another classic set of wheels to fill up my spare time. First car I ever went in at a few days old, nearly the right two tome colour scheme as well

dodgy jags

Best solution is throw the rest of the jag away and put the lump in a Dolly!
I've heard the timing chains are a bit iffy tho on the V8's. Have to remove engine to change it too!
