Cooling

Jon,
You are correct. My cooling issue is the water pump seal which has failed. The pump is now replaced. I was also looking at the rad and it was definately second hand, so I'm having it recored with a higher capacity. To get the rad out I've got the fan off, so thoght a Kenlowe would be a more reliable replacement after hearing stories of viscous couplings failing and chewing up the rad.
The engine is pretty standard, but I do have a tendancy to give it a good seeing to when I take it out, so a little extra cooling is definately required.

Thermostats

Might be too obvious but half of the slant 4 cars I have bought over the years came with the wrong type of thermostat fitted. Without the 'foot' cooling can be seriously compromised.

I too have never had cooling problems on the road with a standard set up.

Even on the race car I still run a standard radiator, standard plumbing, thermostat etc. Major changes are 100% water with a water wetter and management of air flow to ensure it all goes through the radiator. Car does have an electric fan but that is more from perspective of getting rid of the drain on engine power from the standard fan.
