sorry for a slight thread hijack stew
Stu, are you still waiting for the Sprint to be painted?
yeah, I'll get an update on the progress (or lack if it) this weekend.

I'm kinda' envious over stew's rapid progress, it is what I'd like to be doing to my donor dolomite :D

Spent yesterday arvo on the car, water blasted all under neath her to remove surface rust and old dirt etc.
All under the wheel arches aswell and sprayed with under body sealer.

I then decided to check the compression of each cylinder, and adjust the plug gap to 0.025 ( it was spitting at 5000Rpm)
this did seem to stop it, Plugs were all a good colour, and compression was 170psi on every cylinder.

After that i decided i would see how the trans tunnel would fit up.
Wouldn't clearthe gearshifter, so i got out the grinder and cut a good inch or so out of it to make it fit.
Will have to weld some back in on the other side.
Also when i took the tunnel off i had to grind some of the bolts out.
So ill most likly have to rivet it to the firewall side which is a bit of a bugger.

Also fixed my last oil leak.
I couldn't engage my overdrive anymore and i couldn't figure out why.
So i had a real good look around and i found where the oil was coming from,
it was sitting up on the gearbox X-member.
The oil was coming out of the bolt that is just infront of the solenoid, for some reason it was no tight.

Im thinking it might be a good idea to drain the oil back out of the gearbox, and check that the oil filter on the bottom of the box is still clean, incase there was crap been held up somewhere. Then refill it with oil.
As also i have no idea howmuch oil i dropped out of there.

Also ive done a bit of hard running, just geting ignition and things right, would it be a good idea to check the head again?
As ill be taking the rocker cover off again to paint it finally???

What do you guys think????

Still don't have a memory card for my camera.
So no pics today.

Cheers Stew

my oath I do ! If there is a single lesson from this whole forum it is that you can't be too careful when running in a new engine and head. Take off the cover and retorque !

get that memory card sorted ! we need a picture fix

good work stew, as always.

The engines not new, well it hasdone 2000miles or so.
New parts, are just gaskets, plugs, timing cover, front and rear seals.

The bottom end was fully reconditioned etc before i built it last.
New pistons bearings, re ground crank etc.

I have re tourqued it once so far after a over night cool down.
Ive just been ripping up and down my road.

But i think ill check it again anyhow.

Yes.

Then again after 500 miles/800km and thereafter at 3000 mile/5000km intervals (which of course corresponds with oil changes, so easy to remember when its due).

Looking good!

A539s are generally well regarded, I've got them on my road car at the moment and I'm pretty impressed. They are getting hard to get hold of in this country though :(

AS the body on the car has been changed i will need to change th Vin numbers over.
Save me from re vinning etc etc.
To make it less dodge i am going to just cheap spray the whole car in Primer, all one colour etc.

So after a boost round tonight in the wind were having at the moment I did all this

Pulled the lights off the front
Got the bolts out of the plastic grill that had rusted them selves in
rubbed the front panels down

Alrity
Spent the day on the car today well half of it after getting some more fire wood, cleaning around the car burning s##t.
Replaced all the fuel hoses that go between all the steel hoses etc
Replaced the fuel filter after getting ride of the small amount of s##t laxing out in the old tank.
Shortened the fuel hose in the engine bay, added a fuel filter on the carb side that should hopefully never get dirty
Retourqued the head

Went for a few strops up and down the road, Overdrive not working again, Bloody switch is being a real pain.

Then parked the car up in the clean shed with clean floors etc.
Jacked in up nice and high for my Bro in law to work his magic (hopefully coming Tues or Wed)

Removed the fuel tanks to check for rust under it, none to be found though which is mint!
Plus saftey while he is welding in there etc etc.
When i emptied the tank got to see if the fuel light works.

Which it does!

Man its great to have the original Dash Gauges etc all in there again.

All so Put a Oldschool.co.nz Repn Sticker on just cause i can.
My Local Club i belong to
They are a online Forums with guys with young guys with old cars.
Great Guys

Sanded the rear end down, Till i found some bog on the left hand side on the bumper, just looks to be a bump etc.
Patched up s##t as, though the rear has a coupl of dings in it.
For now i think it will just get re bogged.

Worst of the rust after the Battery,Chassis Holes (That are already patched etc)

That sheet steel is a bargain :) .

newguy wrote:decided id try connect thespeedo up, but my cables to short.

Try a T2000/2500 speedo cable, as these are longer.
The ends vary on these cables, I think what you need is from a T2000 mark2/2.5PI mark 2 (with A type overdrive) or possibly an auto. In his thread, you'll see that Triplecustard used a Stag speedo cable but I suspect that T2000/2500 models are more common/less rare in New Zealand?
