Lucky for you lot that I can see the funny side. I'm sure there's something positive I can take from this. Jeroen, I thought the same thing. Maybe this was a sign. I shall be considering the next battery purchase a bit more carefully. Mahesh are you sure it isn't a leisure battery you've got there?

There are positive and negative aspects to what has happened.

Sorry, couldn't help it.

Well well well!

Much to my shock, the battery was reading 12.43 volts on the multimeter so it isn't totally dead. I've found out that it isn't a lead acid battery. It is one of those calcium ones so I might be able to bring it back to life. I've put the new earth cable together and I've given it a coating of white grease where it is exposed to prevent any future corrosion. I've now got the battery on charge and I'll leave it for at least 24 hours.

Most definitely not.

I've had this one quite a few years. The 9v battery that I recently fitted did come from Lidl though! Their Aerocell batteries have been proven to outlast Duracell ones so I now swear by them.

The battery had about 36 hours on charge and nothing's caught fire or burned down. I didn't bother taking a reading because the voltage will be higher when it has just come off charging so I'll leave it for a while to get a more accurate reading.

Dave that charger you have is not the one with the bad reputation, I have one similar to yours different make but intelligent. Charges up very quickly from unable to crank engine over to full charge in a couple of hours. It is not however the type that can be left on permanently over winter and the instructions say as soon as possible after showing full charge take it off as it can damage the battery. Check yours it could be similar and leaving it so long may be detrimental in the long term.
