Had a customer today with a nice little early '90s Rotary watch that the glass, complete with bezel, kept falling off. It wasn't anything really expensive (probably a couple of £100 in today's terms), but an honest, decent quality, watch that the owner was clearly attached to - likely a treasured present when new.

A few seconds examination showed that it had the wrong battery fitted. It should have been 1.6mm thick, the one in there was 2.1mm and that half a millimetre extra was enough to push the whole movement and dial forward in the case, popping off the front, as the back was fitted.

It turned out that she'd recently had it replaced at a certain national chain, who "recruit only on personality" (rather than ability?), charging SIX TIMES our replacement price because their prices are based on the brand of watch (the "better" the watch, the more you pay) rather than the cost of the battery and time involved.

Unfortunately, having charged extra for working on a "nicer" watch, the pressure from the wrong battery had slightly distorted the case, and bent the setting stem so the dial now "wriggles" slightly when setting the time.

Fortunately they hadn't bent the dial (because the case gave way first!) and the owner noticed before the bezel fell off in the street somewhere. Either of those would have effectively written the watch off.

As it was, correct battery fitted and a couple of minutes complimentary case work, and we had one happy (with us, anyway ) customer.

I've never quite worked out whether this sort of thing (it happens more often than you'd think) is down to laziness, incompetence or dishonesty but, whichever it is, people should NOT be paying a premium for it!

On a related note. I'm considering taking my Yaris off the road for the 13 days between my insurance expiring and my 21st as my quotes drop by a couple of hundred when I am officially a year older. Gotta' love the way insurance works.
