Halfords stock it at £3.00 per meter:

They have it available in stock for "collect in store" at Aberystwyth but not at Carmarthen.

Local tractor dealer supplied the bits

Result
today saw Bruce starting and driving. Hes not running brilliantly, starts and idles problem free but is very down on power. I think I need to fiddle the mixture. On a side we currently have no windscreen wipers. I think ive probably knocked the wiring when changing the speedo cable. The indicators are not working either are they on the same circuit?

Wipers repaired. I had dislodged a spade connector on the back whilst changing the speedo cable. Indicators can be coaxed into working and are currently cheakily wired to 2 flick switches as the original stalk is now on the back seat as the rivit has failed. Justyn have you still got a spare stalk and if so how much do you want for it

Still not quite right. So is going to get a decent tune on monday. A second opinion from my local friendly mechanic has been called on. Ive got it going well enough to get it up to his place where hes going to stick it on the rollers and crypton and tune it that way.
to celerbrate have a video of it running and idling for the first time in 6 weeks if a bit sickly. Oh and yes it is that quiet.

Just got the car back with some very bad news. Cylinders 2 and 3 have no compression and it is running purely on 1 and 4. I think the head gasket has blown but obviously it will need head of to be sure. Get this it sounds as normal as it has all the time I have owned it.
Video proof a smoothly running 4cyl on 2.

Not very happy now. But I have all the replacement bits in stock so it can be done straight away.

That video is not running on two cylinders - I'd stake my entire tool collection on it. Easy way to check though - if it is then you can remove No 2 and No 3 plug leads and it'll still run exactly the same. If it does, please post another video showing it running the same but with the two leads removed and an address to send the tools to (terms and conditions apply)*
* Collection in person not available, postal charges will be payable before delivery at rates to be set by me, your home may be at risk if you do not keep up payments on a postal charge secured on it, etc etc etc

Look more closely plugs 2 and 3 are disconected. Rather than giving me your tools just come and use them to fix it

Fair play - after 657 miles in a Daf yesterday my eyes aren't as sharp as they might be - I'm also gobsmacked that it's doing that, but stranger things do happen.
As for bringing the tools down to fix it, unfortunately I'm not going to be driving
anywhere ever again after yesterday (nor am I ever drinking again, blah blah blah....) so it'd be a lot quicker to do it yourself. It really isn't a bad one to do - one of the few jobs that really do work out the way Mr Haynes says they should!
If you'd like to claim your prize, postage will be just £10495.99 payable in advance by Paypal

You told me over two months ago that the head gasket needed changing so no real surprise there then?

Not a suprise. Just a pain that it couldn't wait half an hour then it would have been at a mates workshop. Not at the side off the road surrounded by kids on their summer holidays. I am taking this as a que to do all those bits that ive been meaning to do but haven't been able to.
I have 3 options.
1. Try and do it at home. This will mean doing the whole lot in 1 day as it needs to be together at the end of each day. A tall order when the neighbourhood brats steal anything thats not bolted down on this car and half my tools.
2. Tow it to the farm and do it in peace and hope the suspension can cope with a mile and half of pottholed dirt track. Alternatively attempt to drive it their on 2 cylinders. I dont think thats a good idea or that it would manage the 7 miles.
3. Use my breakdown repair cover to have it repaired proffesionally at no cost. Head gasket failure is covered. They will also overhaul the head whilst its off
Also forgot the gasket had already blown around the oil channel near number 4. That probably means that number 1 is doing near enough all the work. No wonder its poorly. Also makes me wonder how long this has been going. If I hadn't knocked the carb tuning out whilst playing with fuel pumps would it have been noticed? Its been a bit down on power recently but not hugely. The only other sign was on the last time it was driven distance it was chucking blue smoke out the back on the overun. At which point I decided it was time to do the HG and then the fuel pump packed in.

Option three FTW! And can you tell the rest of us which recovery service it is that'll do head jobs for free please? I have a cousin's Escort (T reg 1300 Sport) one to do this coming weekend but if I thought that she could get the job done, including a refaced head,
for free, I'd advise her to take that cover out
immediately!
