Oli, I usually run it for a couple of minutes to listen for nasty noises. I don't want to put the rad etc. on just to take it back off again if there is a problem.

That was my thinking too... Thanks for the quick reply Mart.
I'll start my own thread sometime in the near future... Honest.

Martin

Is it that a new seal is making the boot a tight fit and you can't compress the lid enough without it bouncing back ?

If it is , i had a similar issue with my Chevy. In the end i carefully pushed it hard until it clicked shut and then left it for about a week. When i opened it the next time and then closed it, it was much easier and each time i left it, it got easier again.
Just make sure you don't push so hard as to bend the panel or damage that nice shiny paint.

Sorry to post a potentially silly question in your thread
nah Oli, thats what marts resto threads are all about ! gives the rest of us some insight into how to do things properly, efficiently and how to prevent future problems. The number of times I've looked at what Martin and Mary do and stored it away as a brilliant (and sometimes obvious) idea is quite high.

Mart's resto threads are fantastic.

Depending on your water pump seal type....I'd be loath to run a slant4/stag engine with no water in it.

That graphite seal could get very hot...and is basicly a lump of coal.

Note from Admin: sadly Jon passed away in February 2018 but his humour and wealth of knowledge will be fondly remembered by all. RIP Jonners.

Re: boot lid rubber: We took the rubber back off & compared it to another I have. The rubber we just removed is quite solid compared to the other one, so we put the other one on and now the boot lid closes. :D

Re: running the waterpump dry: You could be right Jonners but I don't reckon it will get that hot in the amount of time I let it run. I use the metal type from Tony Hart (no, not the Tony Hart from 'Vision On' ).

Re: Stu: Thanks Stu you are too kind.

I haven't been updating the resto thread lately. :fingerwag: But we are still moving along. The car is now running smoothly after I tuned the carbs. The front brake flexi hoses are now on so there's nothing stopping me bleeding the brakes. The gearstick is in place & tunnel carpet on. I still need to find the steering wheel pad. oh! and the front bumper is on.

I hopefully have a servo on it's way and the number plates should be waiting for me at the office when I return tomorrow.

After purchasing a new drill yesterday I finished polishing the 3 remaining wheels (not just the rims  ) this afternoon...

Just started, using 180 grit...

...stage one finished with 180 grit...

...stage two finished with 1000 grit...

Mary will finish painting the wheels at the weekend I expect.

Don't want to do my compos do you?
They look great, surprised you get such a good shine after going straight to polish from 1000 grit.

Hi Mart
Good to catch up with you, Mary and PUS on Sunday and cheers for the parts some of it has already come in handy.
I got to the bottom of my rough running problem, the HG has gone (again  ).

Good to see you again Justyn. Glad the parts were of use. You could've fixed the HG outside the house, I'm sure it would've only taken about ten minutes. :D

As for PUS, I have now resprayed & fitted the servo I got from Grewham. This was the 3rd servo I've fitted. The wheels are all polished so I may take them down to the sprayers this afternoon where the tyres have been waiting to be fitted (garage next door). I've also drilled the holes for the cill trim. I have a few bits & pieces left to do over the weekend & hopefully I will have it ready to take to the sprayers for him to finish off & get MoT'd next week sometime (that's if I don't go to Castle Combe tomorrow  )

After a hard days graft at Castle Combe yesterday I decided I would have a relaxing day in the garage today. :D

We managed to bleed the brakes at last. We fitted the polished alloys shod with new Pirelli P3000 tyres. Mary fitted up the rest of the boot trim. We then fitted the spoiler, windscreen wipers & washer jets and refitted the rad again (taking a break to watch the GP of course).

So apart from putting some oil in the diff. and tightening the front suspension bolts once I've run it in & out of the garage a couple of times, that's about it until it comes back from the sprayers again. Better fit the bonnet as well. :D

 Wow.That Sprint looks fantastic.
I really love that colour :D
Even my 16 year old son made favourable grunts when I showed him :o I'm trying to convince him a Toledo or Dolomite is a good choice as a first car, although he's more interested in a classic Beetle or Mini

It seems to be two steps forward, one step back recently. I had trouble with the clutch not working, I've solved that. Now the servo is caput again (that's the third one), and I haven't been anywhere yet (apart from a few yards in & out of the garage). I also have a high-pitched squeal coming from the front of the engine somewhere. It gradually goes quiet whilst on tickover but returns when I rev the engine. I thought it might be the viscous coupling or the alternator but I've run the engine without a fan belt & the same noise was still apparent. The only place I can think now is the waterpump. It was refubished so it got a new bearing. I wonder if I got the clearance wrong between the pump & housing? :-k I'll have a look this evening.
