When I did mine I had the bearing seated on the shaft then heated the cage with a hot air gun- they get really hot on the cage. The shaft and bearing dropped in easily and I left it to cool in the upright position with a tube underneath so the gear was free.

The bearing has to go right to the bottom of the cage. It normally drifts in fine by just a gentle tap on the top
of the shaft. Then the oil seal should also push down and sit in the cage and be tight so it doesnt go round with the spindle. It should be bound by the bit of cage just below the holes. Then the flinger goes down far enough to sit on the bit of the shaft where it changes diameter a tad. Then you can see it through the cage holes. Then the seal pushes or drifts in and you can fit the hole thing in the block.

You can feel the teeth engage and maybe drift the cage down the last 1/8 inch or so as per the guide with a big socket.

Never needed ANY heating or cooling to sort this...just the "force" in the right places and right amounts.

Bit of red rubber grease or vaseline on the pump cage O rings helps. Make sure you dont get them round the wrong way as they are slightly different diameters but will stretch and catch you out.

Thanks guys,

Checked the brass cage to engine block today, its a easy fit and will push in by hand, both old and new cages.

The shaft bearing to cage is another matter, and before I get carried away with it and do something silly, I put it to one side and cleaned the block area.

Only had about 40 mins this morning, ( time constraints are a good motivator )

Cut a piece of aerial mast, (soft, but the right size) and used it to hammer down
the bearing, this way the impact is on the bearings outer ring where the resistance
is as opposed to striking the shaft and impacting the inner ring.

Put the oil seal in, which as Jon said should not spin with the shaft, (done), put
flinger in and again as said, visible from the cage, (done) the the last seal, which
when a bit of pressure is applied, seals onto the brass cage, (hopefully correct).

That looks spot on to me Mahesh.

Got mine all back and running again yesterday. took it for a spin out into Southampton and enjoyed all the on-lookers - not sure what they were saying though, might have been "can you smell petrol coming from that old Blue wreck in the inside lane"....but all I hear is "wish I had one of those!"

Want to post a few pics for you but at the mo the ones I attach are coming out in the post HUGELY oversize and almost impossible to view. Will try to do some others and re-send.

That looks much more like it. I've never had to hit the bearing that hard to get it in...

I guess if you stuck the cage in a pot of hot water for a bit the bearing would drop in a bit more easilly.
That top seal design isn't one I've seen before. I guess the upper rubber bit below the graphite ring provides
the pressure for the seal.

Just look again at how you fit this in the block first and then tighten on the impellor when the brass cage lip is nicely
flush with the block.

Should be a good'un then...

Inserted the brass cage and waterpump shaft back in the car this evening.

I put the whole assembly in place, and turned the shaft a little, teeth engaged and pulled the brass cage down about a half inch, after that pushed in most by hand, and evenly hammered down with a hardwood pole.

As far as I can tell, it's as flush as it can be, will check in sunlight in the morning.

Thanks Trevor,

I think Jons wiki instructions are quite good, and with pictures from the Forum it's not too bad.

I got the impeller from Steve today, however it may have to wait till Monday, :(

Still got to put the cover on and choose the right thickness of gasket, and then its
a water test, before I put it all back together.

Good fun, and good learning.

These pics would make a very useful addition to the wiki guide but sadly at the moment when I
bring it up it says its under maintenance so I cant add anything.

Kinda makes me think we should bring the wiki under control of the forum?

I am thinking of collating all of the information with pictures in one place, because in 10 years time will probably have forgotten the finer
details.

I have to say that top seal looks weird to me. I've only ever seen the sprung graphite type where the graphite ring provides a seal on the underside of the impeller. Maybe yours is a 'new design' but if that top seal is all rubber I don't seal how it will last - or maybe it is graphite but the pics don't show it.

I like the way you are progressing with the repair though, measured, patient and thoughtful progress.

Finally managed to get to the car at 7am this morning, but it's freezing cold, so 15 mins work was the max I could do, before rushing in for another cuppa.

I took a better picture of the seal, have a look Karlos, it had me stumped initially, my old was like two pieces of plastic with a sandwiched spring.
