Toledo MGY 147P rolling restro
Re: Toledo MGY 147P rolling restro
Nice work mate, good luck with the resto! Not sure if you've sorted your grilles yet or not, but I used Plastikote paint on mine and it's spot on:

Still looks the same now, I used Matt Black.

Great stuff Rob, and a good reason for new Toledo owners to become club members. Easy to pay now too using the clubs paypal account and there is lots of benefits for members plus an excellent magazine.triumphtoledo wrote:It's great to see so many Toledos being restored, especially as nice ones are so rare now.
The Toledo Register has part of the club magazine dedicated to it, called "Toledo 2-4" - and so I have deleved into the club's Toledo archives and have written a piece on the Toledo's history for the next issue.

Re: Toledo MGY 147P rolling restro
wow 3hrs to restore the rear number plate! the one it came from the show room with! which seems to be the only type of plate you can no longer buy!!!! anywhere. it is made of alli plate and removable digits which are bake-alite. but it does look good now. everything is coming together for the toledo ready for the powderham castle show on the 8th of july! bring it on.
Re: Toledo MGY 147P rolling restro
Bluemels semi peak. Those digits aren't Bakelite (urea formaldehyde), they're plastic (polystyrene to be precise)
Plates of that style are still made at Chestnut (good) and Framptons (pretty much as good but dearer).

Maybe they've become brittle with age. That typifies Polystyrene and similar materials but the certain way to tell would be to try and rub a little of the surface off one of the characters with some glass paper. Organics such as polystyrene would let you do that, hard resins such as Bakelite will mark, but won't take any forming or, for that matter, survive having the little rings fitted to the pins that hold the letters on.
I've got about 400 characters both for 6-digit and for 7-digit plates (these things find me, I don't need to look them out, honest
) and only the larger ones, as fitted to the plates with the bigger, pre-1963 font contain any that aren't some kind of modern plastic, the smaller, post-'63 ones are all polystyrene so far and some have been attached to their backing with polystyrene cement used to soften the pins and make rivets of them.
Still, none of this alters the fact that suitable period plates are out there, the trouble is that the makers tend not to publicise them that well, probably why so many 1973-2001 cars have been retro-fitted with plates bearing the current, smaller again, characters.
I reckon they're the icing on the cake for a nicely presented car, maybe that's just a me thing?
