Jon, sorry but thats not correct.
Sorry to add yet more confusion, but if you are running Lumeniton then the choice of coil IS important and the wrong coil can cause damage to the module and coil.... You need a coil with a high primary resistance, around 3 ohms. The DLB 105 Sports Coils are only around 1.5 ohms and are NOT suitable. Use a standard DLB 101 or equivalent... This only applies to Lumenition systems, the cheaper Accuspark / Powerspark units will work with a DLB105.

In my opinion, having spent many years supplying Lumenition, the best coil to get is a Bosch 0221 119 027. It will work fine with Lumenition, points, Accuspark, Powerpark.... Ive never had one fail, never had a warranty return on one. I have one on my Dolomite and no issues. You will need to bypass the ballast feed and give it 12v all the time though.

Condensed version is that you MUST have at least 2.5 ohms primary resistance - so:

Standard Ballasted Coil (1.5 ohm) plus Ballast Resistor ( 1.5ohm) = 3 ohm total, no problem. This is the standard Dolly setup.

Standard Unballasted Coil (3ohm), bypassed ballast resistor - Also ok.

Sports Coil (1.5 ohm), bypassed ballast resistor - Not ok.

Accuspark advise against using coils of less than 1.4 ohms. So I wouldn't use a 6V sports coil with an Accuspark, it's just too close to the bone.

Thanks for the clarification Matt.

I was under the impression that the DLB 105 had a higher resistance and is unballasted and its the DLB 110 that is designed
for ballasted systems.

Looking at that doc was instructive, but I'm not sure your advice applies equally to the magnetronic. Without seeing the lumenition
part numbers I'm not sure what Rob currently has fitted....I'll trawl back through and see...

So all I can glean is that Rob reckons his 105 coil has 3 ohms so should be fine, which concurs with what I've always
thought...the 105 is for unballasted.

Don't know which Lumenition Rob has, but a DECENT 105 should be fine....

That being said I take on board the thoughts of various forum members and sales outlets like Moss
about the recent quality of Lucas gold coils. I must have been lucky in getting a decent one years ago.

Looks like its Bosch only from here on in....brazillian or not....

So Matt you have learned that not all gold sports coils are the same and Ive learned something too.....:-)

I read that. It may be a good rule that if you put in an electronic ignition a non-ballasted coil, seems safer all round.

I have been running a 105 with my magnetronic for some time.

For an over repeated subject that everybody knows about there seems to be a lot of discussion going on (including handbags at dawn at the NEC it seems!).

That is not a good rule as the ballasted set up has the same total resistance as a non ballasted. So converting to a non balasted system only because fitting an electronic ignition is useless and a waste of extra money. A ballasted system was and is still superior to a non ballasted system, the reason why most car manufacturers did use it in the past, so why convert.

But surely when cranking the engine your coil is unballasted due to the 12v feed direct from the starter motor?
