Although I used colron antique pine wood dye, I'm not sure if they needed it - or any dye at all. If you are re-veneering then I think you would need to be guided by the colour, shade and appearance of the veneer. Hope this makes sense.
After I'd finished mine and they were still in the house I thought they looked a bit dark, but when I went outside and refitted them, I was pleased to see they looked right - and lighter when outdoors. The photos seem to have done justice to the actual colour of mine.
After all the work I'd done, I was a bit mortified to see a full set on Ebay last week for £40. I honestly thought they looked better than mine.
However there is a sense of achievement in doing your own.
