This is not for any sort of cooling system problem though, but just to help reduce underbonnet temperatures that rise from the lack of air going through the rad (not helped by NOT having a constantly running fan) and cause fuel vaporisation in modern ethanol added fuel which in turn makes the engine falter and splutter or die. Your carburettored car will always suffer this way, even if the cooling system is perfect, I recommend lots of louvres! Or fuel injection! Or if you're a cheapskate like me, you can just keep on popping the bonnet in traffic jams like you have been!
