Like why don't you guys stop it when it first starts to occur?
Ahem, BRITISH cars, we're not all English!
For me, my car was a total rustbucket when I bought it, I just hadn't a clue it was as bad as it was already, and it had a darn good hold! And apparently had even been garaged (not any more unfortunately). My lack of experience meant she deteriorated further and I now am in the same situation as Nathan - but she will get fixed!
I know it's a horrible cliche, but man, does it rain here, and there's nothing I can do about that! We've had about three dry days since christmas, which is thoroughly depressing. But I am a total believer in that cars, no matter how old, are meant for driving and enjoying, so yes, I'm afraid I do let her get rusty and then deal with it when the weather allows (not always successfully or beautifully but hopefully that will get better as skills develop). My car will never win any medals though....
Swap you, you come and live here, gimme the sunshine!
All very good points, im scared that if i lived there all my money would seem to end up in rimmers back pocket or someone else with tasty Dolo Parts.
Have you used Fish Oil on the starting of rust before it really does work wonders.
If you put it on and can leave it for a good couple of days without getting it wet i will out
last the salt for months on end.
Hiya Steve, you're right. Dented cars were mucho in evidence. Saw 2 cars have a wee bump in the carpark of our local Hyper U. Lots of looking at dents, shrugging and parting of ways. No one bothered about it really. Everyday parking activity I guess
Thanks for the +ve comments. Hopefully Nath wil post a couple more picture taken this evening. Just painted over the red oxide and have done one coat of anti stone chip. Will do a couple more coats over the next day or so. Then body colour paint after that. Fit shock at the weekend.
Came to look at the car this am, the antichip coat had 'slid' in a couple of small spots. Nothing major. Now painted in the body colour. Will try and refit the shock tomorrow perhaps. More piccies to follow.
I will be purchasing some black Smoothrite tomorrow to do the little bits and pieces, the splash guard included. Shock nearly sorted, will be done first thing. Will also paint the wheel, then move the car over to do t'other side
After that it'll be the front valance, then the sill. Brake master cylinder and MOT, maybe.
Concours might be stretching it a lot but I want to try and do the best I can. Just think this is such a nice car to start with, it'd be a shame to do a slap dash job on her.
Ok, more of a serious update. No Nandos jokes or comments
o/s all back together now, replacement shock doing the job beautifully. Mucho improved compared to the n/s. Moved LD over to one side of the garage to make more space to work on the other wheelarch. Fully charged battery saw her start second time, not bad for a car that last ran..... at some point last year.
The n/s shock came out quite easily and will be discarded 'cos it's knackered. I followed Naths advice and removed the front and rear splash guards. On the whole the condition of the bodywork is pretty sound. Similar to the other side, just surface rust. However, the splash guard was hiding a 10p sized rust hole. This wil be cleaned, treated and patched. Nothing major at all. In fact around the headlight area was slightly better on this side. Mostly due to there being the splash guard to be honest. The next job will be to wire brush everything off and rust treat. Sounds familiar
Had a quick go with the wire brush for an hour or so. Thankfully, all is well under there. As I initially suspected, the majority of stuff is surface rust. Along the back of the wheelarch, above the footwell panel is a little heavier corrosion-wise but again NOT holed in any way. I will cut out the rusty metal and put a proper patch in. I'll take a piccie over the weekend as my description is pants. It will only take a couple of minutes. I know I keep saying it, but under the surface rust, dust and dirt this car is amazingly solid. I will get round to replacing the n/s sill at some point, just to be on the safe side. Not yet though
