I suppose the first thing to do is check the compression and valve clearances, it's a lot less hassle than stripping the engine in any case.

rod bearings but quite difficult to hear above carb noise might be better with sound from underneath

Right Daniel your engine sounds to me to have a number of issues....

I suspect you have a blocked oil feed in one of your rockers for a start. That is what is causing the bad tappet noise at idle. You should see a worn cam lobe and rocker when you take off the cam cover.
The worse noise sounds like timing chain is very rattley to me...
I would certianly investigate the timing chain tension. If it seems good then you have something else very wrong...

the problem is being passed down to me now haha, im goin to buy the engine off adam to put in my 1500 i wouldnt mind finding out what it is though but im goin to rebuild the engine so hope the noise will stop :P
