Thanks Jon. Will do.

I have access to a 6 vane pump and cover from '77 1850 - any reason why I shouldn't go and get that to get me through the next couple of weeks?

I think .....

Rimmers have brand new early 6 vane impellors?

I have a brand new one and a matching s/h cover that I am prepared to sell along with a worn early pump
which has good teeth on the skew gear. £18 including postage. Please PM if interested.
You would need to source a hose tail for the cover (5/8"UNF, an unusual size) but these are available new for about £7?
Also, the LH bolt is missing from the pump.

first off, fit the proper thermostat as it has a foot on it to prevent water going along the by pass port. Without it not all the water will run through the rad.
Please could you explain what the foot looks like. Just fitted a new thermostat and I dont remember no "foot" ??????? Oh, and what a bloody good article, just what I needed, useful tech.stuff. Well Done, any more gems waiting in the wings? sprint stuff of course.

Very many thanks, think I got the wrong one in. Will contact Rimmers today. I bought a load of sprint stuff and just put it all in. Old one never had a foot. Would this cause car to run on the hotter side of normal?

Yes in a word...

The foot shuts off the radiator bypass path. No foot means its still open which means not all the water goes through the rad.

Just to let all know, new thermostat, with a foot all fitted last night. Took for a little spin, raining no hood not good, but all appears well. Hope to get it up to temperture this weekend. Had a little squeak at start up, think it was air in the pump, seemed OK then.

Shattered 12 vane impeller here also, just didn't want to take the risk and decided to go to local oldtimer workshop. They used a press, but it cracked...
Question for now: how to remove the last parts of the vane from the shaft? Can't grip it with a vice (slips), use some local heat perhaps?

Hope to fit new impeller afterwards, can I use a 6 vane in stead of 12 vane or can this cause less cooling capacitiy? Rimmers' doesn't sell a 12 vane.

Yes you can use a 6 vane but you need to fit a matching 6 vane cover.
Early 6 vane means you cant get the laternator bolt in from the rear, which is a pain cos the radiator has to come out to fit the bolt.

Or Sprintparts in Oz made up some new ones in alloy.

Henk, I sliced my stuck impeller using a dremel, down the shaft, enough to get a chisel in there to prise open a gap.

you can see the two vertical cuts the dremel made

Thanks, I'll try that.

@jon: thanks, saw the OZ one, but means 99 pounds in stead of 10 @ rimmers, so 6 vane seems serious option to me.

I was going to move this topic into the "How do I fix it?" section but that is part of the "members only" area so I shall leave it here for the benefit of all Dolly owners.
