 Does the Vitesse choke cable have the pin switch to operate the choke lamp?

It does indeed I think the switch itself is fubared. two little holes in the outer cable which corrispond with the two pins on the base of the switch. Apart from the knob itself not being removable and the vitesse one being twice the length which is nothing a set of tin snips couldn't sort the two cables look identical.

That mine explain why mine isn't removable... I got a it confused with the manual saying "remove the choke knob". I ended up disconnecting at the carb and pulling the inner all the way out to get the the back of the instruments a while ago!

Yep that would be the only way to do it on a FWD with a vitesse cable. It works which is more than the old one did so im not complaining. I also find that the pull wont mount vertically as per the original rather it sit just off the horizontal. Is yours the same?

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses.
Hit it.

Damage is minor as the collision was sub 5mph but my pride is hurt as this is the first time ive hit anything. I reversed the car out of it parking space stopped to select first gear only it didn't the car just slid. Damage is confined to the rear quater bumper which is bent out of shape and torn. I can bring the shape back and weld up the split but then I will have to think of something to do to approximate a chrome finish afterwards. The road outside the house was a sheet of ice this morning, I was not reversing at speed purely on the clutch any faster and it might have damaged the rear valance and fuel tank

Well looks like this thread is going to get busy again as ive now got a bottom end rebuild on my hands after Bruce blew a big end this morning.

Just a thought my synchro is getting a bit week on second it doesn't crunch but is proper stiff when cold so I tend to double clutch to second. Do you good people think its worth putting new synchro rings on whilst the engine and box are out?

Yeah, deffo do what you can while it's in pieces!

So I'm guessing you'll be doing mains & big ends, new oil pump, clean out the sump, replace synchro rings & bearings if they are a bit noisy. Maybe time to stick a spitfire cam in there at the same time? Mick Dolphin has most the parts you'd require. I can't imagine it being a long job if you have a crane (I had the engin out in 2 hrs, 1 week of waiting for bearings etc, then had them replaced and the engine back in in a day.

If you can get the starter ring off it might be work doing the oil seal on the timing cover & the timing chain too, I would have done If I could get the ring off... I now have them in m box of bits waiting for the major rebuild surely to come soon...

That pretty much sums up the bottom end work. I have sourced a spitfire engine that is going to find its way into the car whilst I rebuild the original. That way I can do it slowly and the bill wont be as painfull.

Unfortunatly I dont have an engine crane but I do have a two post lift and an inspection pit to use. The plan was to undo the subframe bolts and strut tops then lift the body of the front subframe with the two poster. That should then give me all the access I need to do the engine.

Well, it wasn't quite 2 hours, was it?
Or are we not counting when I rode over and broke my knee some more?

No, that was the first time, when a) I didn't know what I was doing and b) I was replacing the gearbox :P After putting it all back together, I found the big ends needed doing, so I had to take the engine out again. I admit, the first time was longer, as I dropped the subframe and we were stripping the suspension :P

And brake servo, I believe there are a couple of other differences too ;) Cos that's my intention, already got a pair of HS4s and manifold :)
