If you're balancing the con rod properly, you need to weigh both ends.

Sorry I thought you were pulling my leg! :D

Is that going a bit far for a road engine?

I Googled it Mart!

My basic rod weighing setup, the rod is level, it's just the perspective....

Image

Cylinder - Small End - Big End
1 - 158 - 446
2 - 171 - 438
3 - 167 - 443
4 - 161 - 453

A bit of Thursday afternoon fun!

Just found this vid

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLpiF0E0EJU

Looks pretty simple tbh,

1. Weigh the small ends
2. Take the lightest and take metal off of the others to match
3. Weigh each to determine what needs to come off the caps
4. Take some material off of the caps to match them all.

Just need to make a more accurate stand to weigh them.

What do you think, go for it?

By the way thanks Mart, it's nice to learn something new like this.

EDIT: Then I'd need to balance the pistons by doing the same and removing material from under the crown.

Yes, I've seen that vid too. It's probably a bit OTT for a road car but with your exacting standards...

Jeroen has gone really light with a set he did. There's some pics on here somewhere.

That's it, I'm doing it!! :D

I'll have a search for Jeroen's thread.

If you didn't do it, it would always be nagging at the back of your brain, the thought that, no matter how nice it is, it could have been a little bit better! As I see it, you have no choice!

Steve

I think Jeroen's thread is in the public bar section, rather than Dolomite related or resto. Its called "Start of a new project" or something along those lines.

And it just has!!

Absolutely right, given what's happening to the rest of the car the least I can do is try to build the best standard engine out there.

So I'm thinking that I may just follow what Jeroen has done, imitation being the best form of flattery and all Jeroen! :D

I'll start with the pistons and rods, need to get a con rod balance fixture for this from the states to weigh them accurately.

The crankshaft and flywheel are balanced, block is clean and has been re-bored. I am due to collect a good late head from Julian (tinweevil) so I'm just going to check and probably refub that (if necessary) with my new camshaft, I can do all of the port matching and dowels for the inlet manifold as well. At the same time I'll get the old one finished so I can sell it which will hopefully fund some of this extra work.

Oh and ARP bolts all round I think! 8)

An advance thanks to Jeroen for his post.

Quite excited now, thanks Mart

Okay an update....

Apologies James,
this is rather off topic for your restoration....

Coincidentally, I am in the process of buying one, if it is satisfactory I'll start a thread in due course.
Ooh interested in this :)

Tony
I have a 2008 Ford Fiesta ST 2 litre fuel tank. Its capacity is 45 litres which is near enough 10 gallons). It is very light  .
It is slightly too large to permit the spare wheel to lie flat as normal, although I can get around that without too much hassle by modifying the boot floor.
For sure, it is not a viable option for a Toledo.

A 2010 Ford KA is a similar shape but 25% less capacity so may be a better option once these become common in the breakers?
I may try to get a look at one of these.

Thanks,

Ian.

I meant that I checked the scales read 1KG with a 1KG bag of flour, not the piston!!
