Re: My new track project

#61 Post by Jon Tilson »

A few of us (not from my side I hasten to add...:-)) seemed to have a temporary falling out when I expressed the view that Jeroen just did.

Its good to hear from the horses mouth that this is equivalent to a Mitsubishi Evo. A fair point...

What isn't in question is the quality of the engineering, which is top drawer and the envy of all of us. The satisfacion of doing a Lambo with something that you made yourself can only be imagined. Knowing the kick I get out of doing a Golf Gti in a dolly sprint it must be off the scale...

So as I have a short memory, what's happened to the original? Is ALG1K still on the streets?

Speaking of big V8's did anyone esle see the Pimp My Ride with that big Chevy Impala biodiesel effort doing the Lambo on the drag strip? Awesome.

Note from Admin: sadly Jon passed away in February 2018 but his humour and wealth of knowledge will be fondly remembered by all. RIP Jonners.

Jonners, can't make it on time tonight to the pub. I think half an our delay.

For Darren, it's good to see you are putting it into a Dolomite. I'm not that kind of purist!
When i was on holiday to Italy with a caravan behind the dolomite i was on a parkingplace on the way home in Germany when a man asked me if the car had the original engine? I told him that fitting a Toyota engine in was too easy.
Everybody his own challange.

Time for a small update just dont seem to have the time with the pc the last few months ,
Any way hears a couple of picks
Can you guess where this is ?
Image
I have taken the fire wall back out and moved the engine back a little more !!
This is where the exhaust will exit now over the gbox and down
I have also put a exhaust tunnel into the floor to the back seat area to keep the exhaust higher for more clearance as its a 3.5 " one like you see on saxos
Image
Image
I have used quite thick gauge steel standard dolomite is around a mill thick well what i have measured taken out of the fire wall
Image
Its a bit harder to work with but for the extra strength worth it ,
I have also now got a T45 full weld in custom cage which will go in when i have done the rear suspension
45 KILOs in weight which i can get back with the carbon doors and roof,
I have also managed to graft the dolomite steering and switch pack onto a corsa epas system
Image
No run out either which was nice
Image
I just have to work out how to get it to the rack LOL
Image
I will be using this sliding bearing in the bulkhead
just want to do it in a way so i have some collapse crash protection
Image
I have left most of the original paint on the car for protection as its still outside so looks a little worse for wear
I also have a bolt in cage for sale which i bought for this project with the door bars ,

Nice update Darren, good to see some progress, hopefully your cage will fit a bit better than mine, some of the bends were a way out, they have redesigned the cage since I bought mine though.

Hi Neil
I got mine from custom cages in Daventry so not to far to take bits back if there wrong
I popped over and had a look at some of there work as i was going to get them to fit it ,
But at nearly 1k to fit i think i will have a go myself ,
Im going to fit the same rear suspension as you have done then fit the cage ,
Im also going to make a ladder suspension that i can change over to the bottom of the 4 link points on the body for some drag action
I am also getting rid of the subframe and making my own as i want to drop the front of the car without compromising suspension geometry have done a little to it allready will post some pics up when i have finished it
I just need more hours in the day :(
I think i may be to old to drive it before its finnished LOL

Hi Darren
That was my approach, having fitted one though, I can see why they charge so much, there is allot of work involved though I probably took more care than they would of. I take it you have the one with the door bars in two bent sections?
Did you get them to profile the ends?
Sounds good keep the updates coming.

Hi Neil,
I have to pick the cage up this week . The money i have been charged for it if the ends arnt profiled they wont be getting any money ,
I have a tube notcher and a hydraulic pipe bender so if any do need a slight tweek i should be able to do it
Dont know about the door bars but i suspect there the bent ones with the weld gussets,

Picked the new cage up today ,
T45 supposed to be 4 times stronger then cds
I hope this stiffens the shell.. this one may handle !
Looks like i'm going to be doing a tad of welding,
Had a long chat with the lads that fit the cages there and they have given me a few tips !!
They also told me that the plates that need welding to the shell or any part of the cage that is welded to the
Body needs to be done with normal mig wire and not the cage wire

Some new bits arrived
Stack dash readout with lots of addons 10.000 rpm limit i will use 9300 on this new engine..
Image
Stack 4 bar boost gauge which i hope to strain to its limits :D
Image
Some engine parts
Solid cam followers and cams
Image
Image
Image
This little devise that when wired into the ecu will enable
a minimum boost setting to high in 10 incriments,
The minimum that the engine will be able to run will be 500 hp   8)

This looks fantastic Darren! I am in awe of the workmanship that you and Neil have demonstrated on your respective cars.

Did a little bit to day
put some of the cage in to set up the front triangulation bars so i can weld the bulkhead in,
Its all got to come out again for paint prep on the shell but it hasn't been as bad as i thought it was going to be
Have had to fettle most of the joints as they were well out
There is also some poor repairs by the previous owner which need sorting before final weld
I'm also putting some extra bars in which i have seen on the wrc cars which think will help with the stiffness and safety of the shell as the dolomite cage hasn't basically changed or been updated by any company's that make them,
I will then show Custom cages to see if they want to update there design,
