Overall, a good day and, as Richard said earlier, we were very lucky with the weather as the early drizzle gave way to a very pleasant afternoon.
My feelings were tempered by having to work Saturday, meaning that despite modern BMW power, I arrived very late at the hotel in Crewe. Then on Sunday, half way to the event, I realised I had left my house keys in the hotel room and had to turn back. This would not have been such an ordeal, had there not been a major charity cycle event taking place which seemed to reduce all of the roads in and out of West Crewe to a snails pace.
When I eventually arrived at the show, the TDC guys kindly gave me my free pass as last year and entry was seamless. The show was different this year as the main show field was being prepared for the big Chris Evans event this coming weekend. This had forced the show into the hillside area to the west of the main access road. The organisers had done their best under the circumstances to try and create a display area, a main arena, and then a Club stand area, but this had resulted in the Club stands being pushed well up into the hills. As I wandered around the show briefly later on at lunchtime a delegation was remonstrating with the organisers about having to drive concours cars through prodigious quantities of cow sh1t. One group in particular were very unhappy indeed; but I could see little that the organisers could have done under the circumstances they faced.
The TDC were allocated an area at the back of the other Club stands, but still "connected" to the main show. Personally, I thought this was a better arrangement compared to last year, where we were very isolated from the main event down by the lake. The organising group (they know who they are) deserve our fullest congratulations for managing to create a really impressive tented village and I particularly loved the Dolomite wind mobile. Jeanette, Andy and others worked very hard all day on regalia and we took some memberships as well. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly and, as the weather steadily improved, it became a really enjoyable day. It was disappointing to see numbers so far down on last year (82 cars versus 53 by my count). I do not know whether this was because it was a repeat of the venue, or for other reasons, but it was a shame nonetheless.
My heartfelt thanks go to everyone involved in organising on behalf of the Committee and membership.
For me, the show ended at 2.30pm as I had to get back to Bromley for a family event that evening. In spite of leaving in what I thought was plenty of time the bottom of the M1 was its usual self, and I arrived at 8.15pm in time for pudding. Not popular.
I took a few general views of the Club area and these are reproduced below. It was a pleasure as usual to talk with so many old acquaintances, and to make new ones of course.
