Everyone puts a filetr on cock eyed once in their lives...
I did it om yold Riley years ago...left half a sump of oil up the road as I drove off...

In future you will learn to spin it quick on the starter with plugs out to see if it seals...:-)

Well done on the manifold leaks...its crucial to have good studs on the manifold. I have also replaced a couple of bolts from manifold to head with studs too as these help locate the gaskets and probably are kinder to the threads in the ally head.
Its also an idea to loosen the n/s engine mounting and jack it up a tad to get a bit more access to the underside bolts...

As to the seal...well you may be lucky JPB and I hope you are. I'd rather not have gaskets either...but Ive never had much luck with a manifold sealing after its been off...somehow they get a bit of a spring in them and never seem to go back flush.

This is the 2nd time I've changed Brown's engine oil and filter. I don't remember cocking it up back then. I turned it over with the king lead disconnected to get some oil pressure. It didn't go out so I hooked it back up, fired up the engine and it still didn't go out so I knew something was wrong so I turned the engine off pronto and checked underneath to be greeted by my mini oil slick. I filled up today and I've averaged just over 22mpg which included the airport run and most of the mileage was before I got it spot on so I should get a better figure on the next fill up. The car is still running like a dream so I'm confident that I've got it running right.

Last night I went down to the TSSC South Yorkshire meeting. It was also an excuse to put some motorway miles on Brown. The area organiser has a TR7 engine Sprint and he offered me some parts that came off a donor Sprint that he'd broken. After the meeting we went to his place and I came away with a complete front suspension. The shockers & springs are much better than what's on Brown so I'll just bolt the whole lot on. I've also got some Goodridge front brake hoses and some shock abosrber lower bushes in poly. I'm hoping that this will sort out the slightly skittish handling at the front. It'll be at least a step in the right direction. This guy has other parts for sale so when he's compiled his list I'll be posting in the "for sale" section of the forum. Apart from the prevously mentioned handling Brown didn't miss a beat last night.

Good move..
I think Sprints may have had a slightly uprated shock as original factory fit....
Ive often found Sprints feel a bit tighter at the forn than ordinary slants but that may ust be down to the tyres.
Ive just fitted some spax to my yellow peril that also came of a Sprint that I broke. It was a good move and its much firmer up front now...

I know Jod and other purists disparrage fitting second hand suspension bits...but the car you buy has secondhand supsension bits already fitted, so whats the difference? You can do a front spring/shock unit in less than an hours so its easy to swap it back....
I found it easiest to fit the shock unit to the top wishbones first then add the outer top ball joint bolt and then the inner one. You can line the last bolt up easilly with a trolley jack...

I've managed to get the left side done. Jonners, I found your method out for myself. The donor Sprint must be a later car because the studs are the 7/16". If I'd fetched my power tools I might've got a bit further. Brown is now running like a bag of spanners so I suspect the points. Why don't they last for long? I'll be investigating in the morning.

Well well well, would you Adam & Eve it? It wasn't the points but more of that later on.

I took a quick look at the points and decided that they needed replacing so a quick call to S&S Preparations (I decided to try a different supplier this time and TR7s use the same points) to make sure they had some in stock (they did) and off I went. On the way there I could smell petrol so when I got to S&S I lifted the bonnet and petrol was coming out of the float chamber of the front carb. I thought that the hose was leaking at the end so I bought some new fuel hose and clips as well as the points. After fitting the hoses the front carb was still leaking petrol but I noticed that it was coming out of the overflow. I tried the simple solution of tapping it but it didn't solve it. Luckily S&S's resident carb guru was there and he dismantled the float and found a sliver of rubber in the needle valve. Once I'd replaced the float chamber lid and started the car up again it stopped coming out of the overflow so not only was the problem solved but I've also prevented it from hapenning again. I got home and fitted the new points which went quite well (again, I removed the dizzy to do it) and upon starting the car up again the problem was still there so starting from the dizzy cap I checked it and found some crap in one of the terminals (where the HT lead plugs in) and once it was cleaned up Brown ran fine. I also fitted my choke cable (a £5 eBay bargain) and not only do I have choke but the choke light now works. I had a bit of diffculty finding the connector until I found out that I'd used it to power my CD player so I've run a wire from the fusebox to supply power for my CD player. (an ignition fed one) I removed the voltmeter and dismantled it to see if it could be calibrated to give a more accurate reading but I couldn't so I've put it back together and refitted it.

I'm now starting to actually enjoy the car so all I did today was to wash it by hand using the 2 bucket method.

Next after filling up with petrol I went for a spin round the local moors. The pic below is the view towards Haworth coming from Hebden Bridge along the A6033.

OK, OK, so I put Sprint badges on Brown. As some of you may know I've already lived that dream and Brown is the replacment car. I've always said that the 1850 is the next best thing.

Well spotted Howard.

I had to replace the brake pads again. I last did this job in April. At first I though it was the left caliper still sticking but it was just excessive wear caused no doubt by braking on steep hills. I also suspect that I didn't bed the pads in properly. I'll try to bed these new pads in properly this time.

I did the exhaust manifold. One of the gaskets (the one nearest the downpipe) had disintegrated a bit so I chucked them away smeared the mating surfaces with Halfords exhaust putty and bolted the manifold back on and it is now leak free. I topped up the coolant, I removed the Sprint badges and refitted the proper ones. The exhaust is a lot quieter but the real proof of the pudding will be the road test. I'm all set for my trip to the north east for the front shockers I'm having from JPB and the front seats I having from pal1972. I'll be taking some photos and I'll post them on here.

Be seeing you tomorrow afternoon then, I'll sit a small jar of Vegemite on the car for a photo so people don't think that it's all a photoshopped fake!

The North East isn't that far from your area though, I'm only about 130 Miles North of you and Sunderland's 40 Miles South of here, so I'd expect your total distance for the trip to be no more than 300 Miles at most, even allowing for the A19 being the pain that it is. An easy afternoon's work for a Dolomite.

Speaking of the A19; any vehicle on which VED is free travels through the Tyne tunnel for free!

Here's the chapter and verse of it, some toll booth staff know this, others will need to be shown the following document:

STATUTORY INSTRUMENTS
2001 No.
HIGHWAYS ENGLAND
The Tyne Tunnel (Revision of Tolls and Traffic Classification) Order 2001
Made August 2001 Coming into force 28 August 2001
The Secretary of State for~Transport, Local Government and the Regions, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 13 of
the Tyne and Wear Act 1976(a) and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf: hereby makes the following Order:
1. This Order may be cited as the Tyne Tunnel (Revision of Tolls and Traffic Classification) Order 2001 and shall come into
force on 28 August 2001.
2. The tolls authorised in pursuance of the Tyne and Wear Act 1976 are hereby revised so that, save as provided in article 3
below, the tolls which the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority may demand and recover in respect of all traffic
passing through and into the tunnel shall be those specified in the Schedule to this Order as from the date on which this Order
comes into force.
3. No tolls shall be charged in respect of any vehicle which is not chargeable with any duty under the Vehicles (Excise) act
1971

1
(b) by virtue of section 7(2) of that Act.
4. In this Order
"motor cycle" means a mechanically propelled vehicle having less than four wheels and, in a case where a cabin is provided,
the cabin of which is not so constructed as to enclose the driver and any passenger;
"the tunnel" means Work No.2 referred to in section 12 of the Tyne and Wear Act 1976;
"maximum gross weight" has the meaning given by regulation 3 of the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations
1986 (c).
p"
5. The Tyne Tunnel Tolls (Revision of Tolls)Order1999(d)is hereby revoked.
Signed by authority· D ROBERTS ofthe Secretary of State An Under Secretary in the Department for ......... 2001 Transport,
Local Government and the Regions
(a) 1976 c.xxxvi (b) 1971 c.10 (c) S.l. 1986/1078 (d) S.l. 1999/2394 [DTLR .......

OK, so it only saves you £2.40 in total, and sitting there in the daytime is probably less economical than just going along the Tyne and over the Bridge then through Town but hey, it's something for nothing.

Brown is more than up to the job. I've did Birmingham and back (when I got those bits off Jod) and that was before I'd got the ignition & fuel settings spot on. I was going to go through the Tyne Tunnel so I'm definitely having some of that.

I went up and got what I got what I came for but things didn't go quite the way I'd planned. Once I've fitted the bits and got the photos out of my camera I'll be posting the full details.

It was good to meet you, your lovely other half and that very low, brown car yesterday.
I have to admit that I like the way it sits. "Well retro, innit?"

Can't wait to see the picture of the cars nose to nose for a comparison of how enormously far off the ground mine sits!

Ones that I took don't really give the full effect of the difference:
