A lot of the suggestions are transverse, and if you wanted to go this way then I would recommend going for the vag 20vt and 4x4 running gear.

Longitudinal options would probably be scarcer, but imprezza would be one option, if there is enough room between the inner wings for a flat 4.

Dunno, just a thought.
Subaru flat 4 has a lot of tuning potential, I think it's too wide between the shock towers but it would sit in front of them, where the battery would go. Would be a good build, lols of power and plenty of grip

Another possibility I just thought of;

What about front-mid mounting a FWD engine and 'box. Engine would have to be very close/under the windscreen. Would have to get short ratio diff in the FWD box and diffs or have a 1:1 diff made for the centre.

A good example would be X-type/Mondeo 3.0 v6 and box with Mx5/Impreza rear diffs at front and back. Would increase weight distribution and have matching diff ratios
