1500 FWD Oil Filter

#1 Post by rhisiart »

Hi there - looking for some expert advice on oil filters for my '72 1500 FWD. I have no technical expertise unfortunately, but
I've read in several places that you should use the 'correct' oil filter for these cars, the ones that feature a 'non return valve', presumably to prevent oil starvation at start up, or so I'm told. I've noticed that my 1500's oil warning light says on longer on start up after been left standing for a day or so, and there's a noticable litte 'rattle' during this time as well.

Has anyone any views on this - and possibly some constructive advice on the 'correct' brand of filter so that the oil starvation is minimised during star up?
Many thanks

When you start the car , turn it over breify before puilling the choke out this will help the oil circulate before start up.

The club do the right filter which is also same for the 1300 and dolomite 13/1500, i cant remember the part number sorry.

Great, thanks, a great help. Are you saying I wonder that If the correct filter is fitted, the start up oil warning light problem will be less of an issue?

A correct no-return oil filter
A good quality 20/50 oil
Also a can of STP oil treatment (as recommended by Bruce)

All of the above sorted my slightly flickering oil light at idle (t'was after a bloody long run on a hot day though)

An update on the oil filter saga. I contacted the club, but there was no real information forthcoming regarding the 'correct' oil filter with the non-return valve. The only filters available from motor factors locally are made by 'Fram'.
Does anyone know whether these Fram filters have these non-return valves?

I contacted Rimmers and they supply a 'Classic Gold Authentic Reproduction' oil filters for the 1500 (part no. GFE 150) for around a fiver, and they assure me that these are the 'correct' replacement.
I've now also got an 'Oil Feed Pipe' from Rimmers and hopefully this should improve oil circulation to the head - or so I'm told.
Finally, I'm strugling to get an air filter locally ... Fram don't seem to be supplying these any more ... anyone know the correct part number for these?

Any comments/experience gratefully welcomed!

I couldn't tell you for sure. But the engine is essentially the same as a spitfire 1500 or midget 1500 engine, so searches for oil filters with the valve for those engines may well work better.

Fram filter will do just fine :) I only use Fram or Mahle filters in these engines.

I'm currently running one of Rimmers classic gold thingy filters and I also have been running an oil rocker feed for a year or so. I still get a little oil light flickering at idle after a long run, she needs a little rev or choke to settle down again and kinda suspect my idle is too slow.

Never really got on with turn over a little then pull the choke out - with the ignition key on the same side as the choke I feel like I never have enough hands to do it all! Maybe it's a girl thing... :)

I also found Fram didn't seem to do the right size air filter any more - I initially got one and gently creased the fins so it would fit as it was slightly too fat (the one in there was filthy and hadn't been changed in sooooo long) - changed now for the correct size though, again from Rimmers, same as a 13/1500 I think.

The general opinion is that the rocker oil feed pipe is a great fitment for the 1300 engine but not so good for the 1500, as bottom end oil supply is not as good. So anything that would make it slightly worse is not recommended. Did you put in the STP oil treatment by the way?

When you say you contacted the club, how was this done, and if by phone who did you speak to?
