how much is handling and how much is "just for looks"

Avoid if you can - go for something like Gaz, or the dogs danglies, AVO.
I've always heard the stories of them generally being not up to par when compared to other manufacturers - but the guy who I bought my current car off was an ex motorsport engineer who had seen some testing/assembly/engineering reports on them and he slated them so badly that I think I'll be keeping away! He also recommended AVO.
I think the most common problem is the adjusters seize up and the dampers look very tatty after not much use. The adjusters thing, well, how many people are going to toy with them once they're on the car and bedded in.......but still

I have Gaz on my Jensen after my Spax died and I hate the Gaz and would buy Spax over them anyday. Never had any problems with the adjusters but then the car doesn’t see bad weather, they just failed after only two and half years.
My dolly has Spax on it but I've not driven it yet and intend to replace them with AVO's later.
My brother has Spax on his dolly and they have transformed the handling completely.

Spax
Excuse my french, spax are s##t, I have had them on a few previous cars and on the dolly. I had to bin the rears after I went to adjust the height and the lock rings had welded themselves to the shock body after a weeks worth of soaking in penertrating oil, heat and c spannering. Also there customer service is a joke, ive yet to speak to anyone there that nows what a triumph dolomite is.
Rant over, my recommendation is firstly give leda a try, they will build you a proper set matched to your requirements. Secondly try Avo s they are supposed to be pretty good, I think Mark at jigsaw stocks em.

I think we're talking at cross porpoises here. The adjustable damping only Spax aren't bad & much better handling wise (with 1" lowered springs) than the standard setup. I've never had experience of the adjustable damping and spring seat Spax but have heard the adjustable seat does seize up.

Spax
Are OK for the normal driver that what's a shockabsorber better than a standard one.
Come to think of it most aftermarket Shock's are better than the standard one's.
Some of you may recall a problem I had with a rear Spax Shock that decided to start leaking a year after being bought and little use.
Rimmer's did sort the problem out after a bit of reluctancy at first but hat's off to them in the end.
May need a differnet shockabsorber/spring set up when the V8 finally hit's the track so maybe going for Leda's as I know a man that used them on his National 2lt Hot Rod
.
TIP.
Use a old cycle inner tube to cover the damper rod on shock's fastened around the shock tube and around the top,
Stop's all the crap/rain trying to get inside
