My kind of Vinyl roof
My kind of Vinyl roof
Now, I have never really been a fan of the Vinyl roof as fitted to the Sprint truth be told.
I have, however, been pondering a coloured roof for my car since it going orange, to act as some form of contrast to the bright colour. A plain colour never felt quite right though - I wanted something fun.
So, I came up with a plan, and with the help of some very 21st Century trickery, my final idea became reality last Friday.
Look away now the Purists amongst you.......
This is my version of a Vinyl roof
Approx 400 of my favourite records of all time, all on a big vinyl sticker, so a bit of a pun as an added element of relevance to original spec on a Sprint
After painting the car orange, it lost any ability to go under the radar anyway so thought something mad like this was low risk.
The vinyl does not damage the paintwork underneath and will probably come off after a year or so.
In this pic you have a little preview of part of the new interior made by yours truly. I will post some interior pics when I create a Projects thread for the car - must do that soon, only 2 years too late !!
The roof was a real talking point at the Retro Rides Gathering and I am glad people seemed to think it was a cool idea.
I now have to work on my driving skills, as I went out on track and finished a dismal 27th in Class behind cars that I really should have been ahead of with my kind of power. Mart, think I need some coaching

Re: My kind of Vinyl roof
Bloody hell, I was thinking that was good photoshopping
Ive yet to see your car since the transformation from rough shagged out half primmered tolly to todays 'lost for words' machine but look forward to seeing it one day hopefully soon, not a lot of people impress me with modifications but you are one of the few.
Keep up the good work.

No wonder you came away with another prize for the car after putting that on there. It's difficult to be totally original nowadays, most things I see on modified cars seem to be done to death, but that's simply amazing.
Nice idea and definitely the most original way to finish a car panel since these minis with the wickerwork and coins stuck to their bodies:

Impressed! Thats a clever idea and a lot of thought gone into the design.Interior looks good too. Its nice to see someone who can put ideas into reality and do it well.

Excellent stuff! That looks really cool. Lost any ability to go under the radar? More like grab the radar and smack it to pieces
Just out of interest, how pricey was that bit of vinyl?
Hopefully see you soon.

Re: My kind of Vinyl roof
At first I thought "Definitely No!"
Then I thought "Maybe".
After a bit more time to look at it I am still at "Maybe". I like the way it rather personalises the car, but the effect for me, is a bit too busy. I would have probably gone for an old fashioned metal flake roof if it was me, but hell, we are all different.
Door trim looks excellent Al, and the lock buttons are just luvverly mate.
Well done on the award - you have spent enough time and money and its well deserved.

I like that. Maybe I should do that all over my Toledo to make the paint waterproof!

'Ecky thump, Al. That's one cool roof! Can't see any covers of Pink Floyd though!
Re: My kind of Vinyl roof
That looks good and nicely different to everyone elses, very well done on producing a cracking looking car. I'm probably with Martin on the metalflake longer term though
Re: My kind of Vinyl roof
It just 'works'.... Have no idea why; it just does.
I reckon I've also got at least 5 of those albums
PS Any chance of a 'head on' (or, straight down, as the case may be) picture; so we can see what else you might have in your record collection ?

Re: My kind of Vinyl roof
Here are some other pics which may give a better view of some of the records.
I did it because I guess I wear my heart on my sleeve and this makes the car a better reflection of me.
These records, either now, or at some point in my life, have been special to me. There are some on there that may be less than credible, some Guilty pleasures, but I didn't want to represent Mojos favourite albums of all time, these are my albums and have soundtracked my growing up (if I have!). Alas there is no Floyd I'm afraid, they leave me pretty cold (especially post Barrett) maybe one day they won't, but music is a personal thing......
Metal flake has not been part of my life so no idea why I want to put it on my roof.......
I may actually make a list of them as I would be happy to recommend every one on there!
Cheers Guys

I'm seeing the brilliant "Leftism" on there! That's probably one of my all-time favourite LPs, especially tracks 2 & 8.
