Screeching sound

My beloved russet brown 1850 has taken to making a terrible screeching sound from under the bonnet as I drive. It sounds bad but not sure of the exact source. When it starts I run in the clutch and it stops and when I let it out its gone for a while but comes back. Anyone have any ideas??

Thanks for both suggestions, looks like fanbelt. I noticed it only came on at night so the draw on the alternator with a slightly loose belt was the source as far as I can make out. Tightened it and will see how that goes, Cheers

my guess is when you put the clutch down, you also ease off the engine revs, which makes the fan noise stop. Don't do up the fan belt too tight though, puts pressure on the alternator bearings.

good luck
