Sprint O/D Removal

I've just been asked about removing the O/D unit from the gearbox (g/box is out of the car obviously). The person is having trouble separating it. I've done this a few times but can't ever remember the O/D failing to come off. There is something in the Haynes manual about energising the solenoid but I'm sure I've never done that. Anyone done this recently or can remember the correct procedure?

Last time I did it, with the gearbox off the car, I spun the gearbox input shaft with a drill with 3rd or 4th selected then used a battery and jump leads to energise the solenoid briefly, operating the overdrive. You then stop spinning the input shaft and disconnect the jump leads (in that order). Can't remember what this frees/releases ...

The Haynes manual states "If difficulty is experienced remove the plug adjacent to the solenoid, energise the solenoid then force clean oil from an oil gun through the plug orifice. This will require the use of a locally manufactured adaptor or Churchill tool number L402 . De-energise the solenoid once the two units have started to separate." I have never attempted this as I have always used the alternative method which requires the unit still to be fitted in the car. It is to raise the rear wheels and to run the transmission normally. Engage overdrive, then to disengage with the clutch pedal depressed. (This releases the spline loading between the planet carrier and the one-way roller clutch.)

Carls method using a drill seems to be the an alternative to refitting the gearbox/O/D to a car.

It releases the spline loading between the planet carrier and the uni-directional roller clutch.

I have only had to do this once on DHO and the hex-headed plug they mention I had to get drilled and tapped for a grease nipple. This is what the special tool L402 is all about. I then filled the grease-gun with EP90 and pumped it up and with a slave car-battery I flicked the O/D solenoid and off it came. I think its something to do with residual oil pressure in the system and it can stay like that for days. Don't know why I'm afraid.I still have this plug & grease nipple somewhere I think.
I like the spinning the input shaft method for simplicity with hind sight.

Looking at the triumph parts catalogue it is the internal pump that is fitted within the J type. PART NKC28
