1300 Toledo acceleration problem - please help!

Hi all,
I've had tolly for just over a year and have done various bits to her just in keeping her running and maintained. This is my first classic so I'm essentially learning as I go, but this one is baffling me and I don't know where to start really.
She has become more and more jerky on acceleration. It started a few weeks ago. I havent been on long drives recently, only short journeys so I thought the battery was dying. But I charged it and it said it was full. Ive cleaned the carb, and in checking things pulled the tube out of the fuel float which came out very easily. The rubber holding it in was decimated, so a new one of those ordered and fitted, but she's still jerking- more than ever if anything...
Pressing the accelerator pedal down half way she accelerates, but any-more and she dies. Its like she can only get up to a certain amount of revs. and then something happens... such as lack of fuel?.. and suddenly looses all power.
The jet tube into the carb is bent/ creased. would this cause that serious of a fuel shortage? also could it be the fuel pump not working properly? ... I'm going on my guess that the engine is choking from lack of fuel.. but am I wrong in this assumption? Is it some other problem?
Ive changed the spark plugs recently, and up graded to electronic ignition instead of points, and replaced ignition leads.
Any suggestions/ advise is much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Steve
